Corrosion Studies on GeoBrom® HG520 Partial Immersion Study

Brominated derivative products for mercury control… There was little to no corrosion observed on these coupons in the vapor space. Visually, all corrosion occurred in the liquid phase where half of the coupons were suspended. There was no increase in corrosion rate observed at vapor / liquid interface on any of the specimens. Based on this 90 day study, all specimens were less than 0.70 mpy corrosion rate with half the coupon below surface. Mild carbon steel (C-1018) gave the highest corrosion rate at 0.14 mpy at 20° C and 0.65 mpy at 50° C. All remaining specimens were under 0.10 mpy. ICP analysis of GeoBrom® HG520 samples refl ect elevated iron and chromium levels at end of the 90-day period. The maximum allowable corrosion rate for each specimen with GeoBrom® HG520 depends on the application.

Successful mercury reduction in pilot study at Seminole (Golder presentation at EUEC)

Summary: Pilot testing successfully reduced effluent Mercury concentrations to < 225 ng/l. Pilot influent concentrations were lower than historical maximums. Pilot test process reduced effluent Mercury to < 40 ng/l after flocculation and settling unit operations were improved. Results obtained in October 2014 (higher effluent Mercury) need further review (ratio of organosulfide:ferric iron may be a key). Substantial colloidal fraction of Mercury was present. Effective chemical addition, flocculation and settling are necessary so that sand filters (current Seminole polishing process) can be utilized. Tighter membrane filtration might be needed.

China Can Remove Mercury at Low Cost Thanks to U.S. Developments 中国能以低成本除汞得益于美国的技术发展

In order to meet tough regulations in the U.S. technology developers have made great strides in creating low cost routes to achieve mercury removal from power plant exhausts. The cost is especially low if the plant already has a scrubber. China is installing scrubbers on nearly all its plants. As a result China can remove mercury with just a few percent increase in its air pollution control investment and operating cost. There have been some very significant recent breakthroughs which need to be communicated to the Chinese policy makers. To this end Mcilvaine conducted a webinar in Mandarin Chinese with two FGD experts . A presentation on removal technology was made by Bobby Chen of CBI Shaw. Questions and discussion was provided by Shiaw Tseng of Graymont. This presentation in Mandarin is available as a recording in the Mcilvaine Global Decisions Orchard and on Youtube.

Dry Injection of Trona and Sodium Bicarbonate for Multi-Emissions Control by Yougen Kong, Solvay Chemicals - Hot Topic Hour October 27, 2011.

Dr. Yougen Kong, P.E., Technical Development Manager at Solvay Chemicals, Inc., discussed dry injection of Trona or sodium bicarbonate, a low-cost solution to meet the SO2 and HCl limits in CSAPR, Utility MACT and Boiler MACT. Both Trona and Sodium bicarbonate are effective in reducing SO2 and HCl. Trona is slower to react and therefore less effective on SO2 but possibly better if all you want is HCl removal. Lots of the bicarbonate will be tied up in SO2 removal. So if you want to just remove HCl Trona may be the answer.

Dry Sorbent Injection for Simultaneous SO2, HCl, and Hg Removal by Keith Day, United Conveyor. Hot Topic Hour October 27, 2011.

Keith Day, United Conveyor Corporation (UCC), described the results from several recent dry sorbent injection tests for simultaneous SO2 and HCl removal. Dry injection can achieve high removal efficiencies at low cost. There is a backlog of testing but the design and construction period is less than with scrubbers. So if you need to do something in a hurry this is a good route. In fact you can start with a portable unit and then move to a permanent unit later.

Heavy Metal Separation from Flue Gas Scrub Water with TMT15® presented by Rudiger Peldszus, Evonik Degussa GmbH - Hot Topic Hour June 16, 2011.

Ruediger Peldszus, Senior Manager for Applied Technology Advanced Intermediates at Evonik Degussa GmbH, backed up his claim that TMT 15®   is a good choice for separating heavy metals from flue gas scrubber water by citing a large number of installations in coal-fired power plants and also waste incineration plants. When asked how the chemical impacted the gypsum quality, Ruediger explained that the resultant compound is very small and exits the top of the hydroclone and not with the gypsum through the bottom. TMT 15 can also prevent mercury re-emission from the scrubber but for this to be successful, the parameters must be carefully evaluated. One of the participants has a client who has been challenged to successfully use the TMT 15 to prevent re-emission

Mercury Oxidation Test Program Results by John Cochran, Ceram Environmental - Hot Topic Hour April 14, 2011

John Cochran of Ceram presented results of a mercury oxidation test program which will continue through 2013. It is a result of a new major focus on mercury in Europe. The challenge is to balance the NOx removal requirements with the goals for mercury oxidation and SO3 minimization. Mercury Oxidation across SCR Catalyst by Karin Madsen - Haldor Topsoe - Hot Topic Hour April 14, 2011

Karin Madsen of Haldor Topsoe discussed the effect of operating conditions and catalyst type on mercury oxidation across the SCR catalyst. Up to 90 percent mercury oxidation is achievable depending on the inlet Hg speciation and the chlorine concentration. Greater than 91 percent mercury removal is achievable using existing control devices (the combination of the SCR-FGD strategy). Adding additional HCl above a certain point does not improve oxidation. However, bromine acts differently and therefore may provide greater oxidation with increased amounts.

Improving ESP Performance Webinar - Hot Topic Hour January 20, 2010

ESP Performance Improvement can be Substantial - Hot Topic Conclusion on January 20 There has been lots of focus on replacing ESPs with baghouses to meet upcoming regulations. The speakers in the Hot Topic Hour yesterday said there is an alternative. You can upgrade existing ESPs and achieve results which may satisfy future requirements. Dr. Yougen Kong, P.E., Technical Development Manager at Solvay Chemicals, Inc., told the attendees that “there is a better alternative to SO3 for conditioning electrostatic precipitators.” Trona addition system is simple and its capital cost is much lower than that of a SO3 production and injection system. Trona is relatively inexpensive and can be injected in several places. Mick Chambers, Southern Environmental, Inc, said that you can upgrade your ESP and with halogen-based additives in the coal, you can meet the particulate and mercury regulations. He showed that the SCA of recent installations has been relatively low and yet the performance high. So the footprint of a retrofit does not have to be large. When asked about the wet ESP using a fabric for the collection plate, Mick said that it is a good option and successful on industrial boilers and process applications. We were sorry to learn that John Caine passed away in a tractor accident last September. John had represented SEI in several of our previous Hot Topic Hours and has long been a contributor to the industry. Steve Jaasund, Manager Geoenergy Division A. H. Lundberg Associates, made a case for adding a wet ESP after the FGD system to meet the upcoming MACT regulations. In the discussion period it was speculated that the new mass monitoring requirements would make it more difficult for dry ESPs to meet emission limits. The wet ESP will eliminate the exceedance spikes associated with a stand-alone dry ESP. Paul Leanza of Pollution Control Services, Inc. indicated that many utilities have the opportunity to greatly improve performance of their existing precipitators. He indicated that 50 percent of the emissions occur during rapping (rapping reentrainment). These particles are relatively large and do not cause opacity spikes proportional to the mass increase. It was speculated that with mass monitoring this phenomenon will be an unpleasant surprise. Emissions will be higher with mass monitors than they were thought to be with opacity monitors and periodic stack testing. Ron Landreth of Albemarle was pleased to find that their brominated PAC actually improves precipitator performance whereas the non-brominated PAC may add to emissions. So it is worth considering brominated PAC to capture mercury and reduce particulate. Jean Bustard of ADA-ES (ADA Environmental Solutions LLC) related experience with a proprietary conditioning chemical which has performed well and does not impact mercury capture with PAC. The company offers another approach to conditioning hot side precipitators.

Integrated Approach to Mercury Control for Low Sulfur Coals Webinar - Hot Topic Hour May 14, 2007

Mercury from low sulfur coal burning plants can be cost effectively reduced by utilization of combustion optimization, particulate control and sorbent injection. Sorbent usage is minimized. Experience has also been achieved with the addition of biomass to the coal. A hybrid Max 9 collector at 90 MW is operating effectively with substantial mercury reduction in a pulp mill where the fuel is 90% coal and 10% biomass. Combustion optimization is achieved with biomass as either a co-fired or reburn fuel. GE is making quotations and is prepared to deal with the stringent timelines facing utilities in many States.
