Altech MIR 9000 Capturing Market Share for HCl Measurement

Here are recent CEMS orders received by Altech: Altech will provide a dilution system for SO2 and CO2 at a milling operation in Western U.S. The system will comply with 40CFR60. Altech will replace the CEMS at a utility in the Eastern U.S. The system will measure NOx, O2, and opacity from two oil-fired boilers. The unit will be 40CFR Part 60 compliant. A cogeneration facility chose Altech and their MIR 9000 to measure Nox, CO, CO2, N2O and O2. The system will be able to handle the difficult Nox conditions related to this facilities process. The O2 will be in-situ and there will be an opacity monitor. Altech is known throughout the industry for having expertise in the measurement of HCl. Often a difficult gas to accurately measure, the MIR 9000 is ideal for this application. A power plant in the Eastern U.S. chose Altech and the MIR 9000 to measure Nox, SO2, CO, CO2, HCl and O2. Altech will provide two MIR-9000's for a metals processing facility in the South that will monitor Nox, CO, SO2, CO2, O2, THC (VOCs) and Flow. This project will use Altech LCPD probe boxes. This is a good example of how the versatility of the MIR can allow for measurement of all of the mentioned gases with one analyzer.

Certifying an HCl Cems is Complex

Sargent & Lundy LLC (S&L) investigated the status of PM and HCl emissions monitors in the U.S. This included reviewing the technologies and the variety and availability of monitors. This paper presents the results of the study as well as a review of the monitoring requirements under the Utility MATS and the applicability of available monitors to meet these requirements. Also reviewed are the factors that a utility should consider in choosing to monitor particulates either with periodic stack sampling, a PM CEMS or with a PM CPMS (continuous parameter monitoring system) and the complexities in certifying an HCl CEMS with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) current Performance Specifications (PS).

Dry Injection of Trona and Sodium Bicarbonate for Multi-Emissions Control by Yougen Kong, Solvay Chemicals - Hot Topic Hour October 27, 2011.

Dr. Yougen Kong, P.E., Technical Development Manager at Solvay Chemicals, Inc., discussed dry injection of Trona or sodium bicarbonate, a low-cost solution to meet the SO2 and HCl limits in CSAPR, Utility MACT and Boiler MACT. Both Trona and Sodium bicarbonate are effective in reducing SO2 and HCl. Trona is slower to react and therefore less effective on SO2 but possibly better if all you want is HCl removal. Lots of the bicarbonate will be tied up in SO2 removal. So if you want to just remove HCl Trona may be the answer.

Dry Sorbent Injection for Simultaneous SO2, HCl, and Hg Removal by Keith Day, United Conveyor. Hot Topic Hour October 27, 2011.

Keith Day, United Conveyor Corporation (UCC), described the results from several recent dry sorbent injection tests for simultaneous SO2 and HCl removal. Dry injection can achieve high removal efficiencies at low cost. There is a backlog of testing but the design and construction period is less than with scrubbers. So if you need to do something in a hurry this is a good route. In fact you can start with a portable unit and then move to a permanent unit later.
