High Performance Pumps and New Routes to Market

McIlvaine was a speaker at the Pump Summit on June 14.  The subject was high performance pumps which includes both severe and critical service.  The market for these pumps is $23 billion per year.  Two of the biggest segments are oil and gas and power.  High performance pumps are necessarily purchased in a different manner than general purpose pumps.  The lowest total cost of ownership rather than the initial price is most important.   McIlvaine is creating decision guides to help purchasers of pumps and other water flow and treatment equipment determine the lowest total cost of ownership.

$3.8 Billion Ultrapure Water Market in 2017

Sales of ultrapure water (UPW) filtration and treatment equipment will exceed $3.8 billion in 2017.  Electronics companies will be the largest purchasers. Semiconductor, photovoltaics, flat panel and memory manufacturers will be purchasing UPW hardware and consumables for the purpose of washing etching solutions and other fluids from their products in process.

The largest application is boiler feedwater.  Coal-fired power, gas turbine combined cycle and industrial power producers will spend $1.7 billion in 2017 to purify the water which is converted to steam. 

Ultrapure water in the pharmaceutical industry is used for washing containers and products, but is also used directly in drugs and is classified as water for injection (WFI).

In the last decade, new uses for UPW have risen.  One is water to be injected through fogging nozzles in gas turbine inlets.  Humidification in data centers is another application.

Ultrapure water systems incorporate various membranes.  Prefiltration is accomplished by microfiltration and ultrafiltration.  Final purity is achieved with reverse osmosis (RO).  Special pumps and piping are needed to assure that the UPW is not contaminated during transport.

LIFO vs. FIFO filter pulsing to maximize acid gas capture - Last sorbent on the cake is first removed. How do we change that to FIFO? Click here to participate in the preliminary analysis.

Direct Sorbent injection is becoming increasingly popular. Much of the acid gas is removed on the cake formed in the pulse jet filter.  It is critical that the unreacted or last in sorbent is not the first out. Molecular Sieve Switching Valves

Molecular sieves are used to dehydrate gas. The valves used in switching from one sieve bed to another are subject to severe service including zeolite particles and corrosive, hot conditions. There is considerable controversy on the best valve designs and materials choices. Over the next few months we will assemble an analysis and decision guide on this subject. Choke Valve Decision Guide and Webinar

McIlvaine is compiling a continually updated Decision Guide for operators of choke valves used in oil and gas and other industries for fluid control. Contaminants such as sand integrated into varying mixtures of water, oil, methane and other gases provide both operational and maintenance challenges. The guide will identify the major applications and then the performance of various designs and various materials for specific conditions.
