Purchased as part of EPC activity
Doosan recently purchased assets of AEE Lentjes GMBH and increased its air
pollution control scope. It is the largest supplier of desalination plants in
the world. It is a major supplier of boilers and related systems for the power
industry.
The purchaser is challenged by two complexities:
1.
Many companies have specialized subsidiaries who supply one of the products but
not others.
2.
Translation of company and subsidiary names between picture and letter based
languages is inexact
To address the first problem, McIlvaine has provided lists of products sold by
each subsidiary. This is shown at:

and e-mails.)
To address the language inconsistencies, McIlvaine has assigned a financial
entity number to each company and the typical spelling in both English and
Chinese.

Gas Turbine Expenditures to Exceed $106 Billion In 2014
Suppliers of gas turbine systems and components will generate revenues of $75
billion in 2014. Another $31 billion will be spent for operating and
maintenance. This is the latest forecast in McIlvaine Gas Turbine and
Combined Cycle Supplier Program. (www.mcilvainecompany.com)

The largest expenditure will be for the turbines. However, heat recovery is a
growing portion of the total as more operators elect the combined cycle mode.
Dry cooling is also becoming more popular. There is a higher capital cost
associated with dry than with wet cooling even when the water treatment is taken
into account.
This does not take into account revenues received from ongoing operation and
maintenance. The cost of replacement air filters is significant. Replacement
catalysts are another ongoing expense. Ammonia for NOx
reduction, polymers for water treatment and other chemicals for corrosion
control and scaling prevention result in significant expenditures for chemicals.
The installed base is the equivalent of 1.4 million MW. Fixed O&M costs
based on $13/kW/yr will be $18 billion. Variable O&M costs based on $3.60/mWh x
3,000 hrs average will be $13 billion. The total expenditure by utilities,
gas and oil producers and other gas turbine operators will be $106 billion in
2014.

Renewable Energy Briefs
Siemens Energy Announces World’s Largest Onshore Wind Turbine Order
Siemens Energy confirmed that the 1,050-megawatt (MW) wind turbine order it
recently received from MidAmerican Energy Company is the largest onshore wind
turbine order in the world. The news was announced at a commemoration event at
Siemens’ blade manufacturing facility in Fort Madison, IA.
MidAmerican Energy’s order consists of 448 Siemens wind turbines for five
project sites which, together, will deliver 1,050 megawatts of additional wind
generation in Iowa by the end of 2015. Construction activity is underway at each
of the project sites.
Siemens Energy’s Fort Madison, IA, facility will manufacture all the blades,
while the nacelles and hubs will be assembled at the Siemens plant in
Hutchinson, KS. All projects will utilize Siemens’ 2.3-megawatt, G2 platform
wind turbines and will be installed at MidAmerican Energy’s 500-megawatt
Highland wind project in O’Brien County; 250-megawatt Lundgren wind project in
Webster County; 138.6-megawatt Wellsburg wind project in Grundy County; and
117-megawatt Macksburg wind project located in Madison County. The order also
called for 19 wind turbines at the 44-megawatt Vienna II wind project expansion
in Marshall County, which is fully constructed and delivering energy to Iowans.
In addition to the wind turbines, the contract also includes a service,
maintenance and warranty agreement.
Once complete, the new wind projects will generate enough electricity to power
the equivalent of approximately 317,000 average Iowa households.
Etrion and Total Secure Financing with OPIC for 70 MWp Salvador Solar Project in
Chile
Etrion Corporation and SunPower Corp. announced that financing has been secured
for construction of the 70-megawatt-peak (MWp) Salvador project in the Atacama
region of Chile. Project Salvador will be the world's largest solar power plant
based on spot market electricity (merchant) revenues.
Project Salvador will initially operate on a merchant basis where the
electricity produced will be sold on the spot market and delivered to the
Sistema Interconectado Central (SIC) electricity network, with the ability to
secure future power purchase agreements (PPAs). The solar power plant will be
built on 133 hectares leased from the Chilean government through a long-term
concession. The facility will connect through the power infrastructure of
Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (Codelco).
Once operational, Project Salvador is expected to produce approximately 200
gigawatt-hours of solar electricity per year, enough to supply electricity to
approximately 80,000 households in Chile.
Waste2Tricity International (Thailand) Acquires Exclusive License for Alter NRG
Westinghouse Plasma Technology in Thailand
Waste2Tricity Ltd announced that its subsidiary Waste2Tricity International
(Thailand) Limited, has converted its option for exclusive access to the Alter
NRG Corp Westinghouse Plasma Gasification Technology in Thailand into a full
exclusive license agreement. The license is for all applications of the
Westinghouse plasma technology in the Thailand market for an initial term of
five years at a price of $2 million. Waste2Tricity has paid $1 million, with the
remaining $1 million payable in December 2014.
Waste2Tricity will now embark on an aggressive deployment strategy to enable a
multiple roll out in Thailand of 1,000 tons per day systems. Smaller
Westinghouse Plasma Corp systems may also be built. In conjunction with the
existing exclusive license for AFC Energy fuel cells, the Westinghouse Plasma
Gasification license ensures that Waste2Tricity has both the key technologies
required to dominate the Thai waste market in years to come.
The Waste2Tricity process is an environmentally responsible method of disposing
of waste, converting 100 percent of the waste into either energy or a useable
aggregate, eliminating any methane emissions from rotting waste, eliminating ash
which is produced using other thermal treatment methods like incineration, and
when fuel cells are available, eliminating stack emissions and enabling the
capture of carbon dioxide creating a carbon negative model.
Himark BioGas Now Digests 73,000 Tons/Year of Municipal Organic Waste Using Its
Patented Anaerobic Digestion Technology
An anaerobic digestion (AD) facility at Growing Power Hairy Hill L.P. in Canada
is utilizing Himark BioGas International’s (Himark) patented IMUS™ technology to
digest 200 tons/day or 73,000 tons/year of municipal solid waste and organics
(MSW) from residences and businesses in the metropolitan Edmonton region
(suburban communities outside of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada such as Leduc,
Beaumont, Devon and Sherwood Park) for conversion into renewable energy.
The plant, commissioned in 2005, initially processed extremely contaminated
feedstock including sand-laden cattle manure and slaughterhouse waste, as well
as ethanol stillage. More recently, the opportunity became available to handle a
majority of the organics from the metropolitan Edmonton region and surrounding
areas, MSW and SSO which the plant can easily handle.
“Today the organic material that GPHH is handling is being diverted from
landfills around Alberta. These include municipal Source-Separated Organics
(SSO), food processing waste, and sewer sludge. These materials are converted to
energy via accelerated natural breakdown processes in one of the largest AD
plants in North America, thanks to technology and know-how from Himark BioGas,”
said Eugene N. Choimah, General Manager of GPHH. Mr. Choimah added, “The process
produces methane – a completely renewable substitute for natural gas – and that
methane not only drives generators connected to Alberta’a power grid, it also
feeds boilers in an adjacent industrial plant. In a very real way, citizens
generating waste are supplying themselves with green electricity for their homes
and ‘ultra-low carbon’ fuel for their cars!”
JMC Homes, PetersenDean and Canadian Solar Offer Solar as Standard in New
Lincoln, CA Home Community
JMC Homes recently opened The Executive Series at Lakeside in Lincoln, CA,
offering all new homes with solar as standard, in a partnership with
PetersenDean Roofing & Solar and Canadian Solar.
The master-planned community recently held a grand re-opening releasing two new
models with solar as standard. While many new home communities offer solar as an
option, The Executive Series at Lakeside is one of the few communities that
offer solar as a standard feature on all of its homes.
The community has 150 homes with 1.5 kW Canadian Solar Standard on every home
powered by what are considered some of the industry’s highest-efficiency solar
modules backed by a 25-year linear product warranty and warranty insurance,
offered by Canadian Solar.
The homebuyers have the opportunity to upgrade to as much as 5 kW on their
homes. The estimated annual energy savings for a home with a 5kW system is about
$1,700 a year or $85 a month. Tax credits totaling about $2,500 are also
available for most homeowners with solar roofing.
