DSI is an effective Route for SO3, SO2, and HCl reduction - Hot Topic Hour Conclusions

Direct sorbent injection was the topic of the Hot Topic Hour on April 9.

Sterling Gray of AECOM cited the following features for SBS injection:

Other Co-Benefits

o   Higher unit energy efficiency

o   Greater carbon absorption capacity

o   Less SO3 interference

o   Lower gas volumetric flow (higher SCA)

o   Lower ash resistivity (temp and SO3 effect)

o   Higher PA temp and greater fan margin

The SBS is very effective in reducing SO3 and, as shown in the figure below, it more than compensates for the increased SO3 created by the SCR catalyst.

Shuman Moore of ClearChem asserted that very fine powdered limestone is an attractive alternative to other sorbents.  It is injected with the fuel.  Because of its small size it quickly reacts with the SO2. It can boost the efficiency of existing scrubbers or be used as an alternative. Cost comparisons were made for a 300 MW unit.
