Boiler Feedwater Purification has to deal with varying Water Quality – Hot Topic
Hour December 18
Chris Bell
of Ovivo Water and
Michalel Dejak of
Eco-Tec were presenters in
the Hot Topic Hour December 18. Both speakers explained how to deal with varying
feedwater quality to meet the purity requirements for ultrasupercritical
boilers.
The vanguard for ‘better water quality’ according to Chris is Total Organic
Carbon (TOC) reduction with limits moving ever closer to < 50 ppb.
Natural Organic Matter (NOM) can be divided in five forms:
1)
Natural hydrophobic compounds (natural lipids released from bacteria and algae)
2)
 Polysaccharides, hydrophilic (HMW
products from bacteria and algae)
3)
LMW neutrals, hydrophilic (metabolic products like alcohols, aldehydes, ketones
and amino acids)
4)
LMW organic acids (short living advanced metabolic products)
5)
Humic substances or humics  (HMW by-products of bacterial decay)
It is not sufficient to measure just total TOC:
-
Detailed fractionation of TOC in major groups allows a precise design (if
specific removal rates for each process are known).
-
80% removal can only be anticipated using conventional IX based systems.
-
90-95% removal is usual using RO based systems (single or twin pass RO).
-
Ovivo can provide complete feedwater treatment systems starting with the intake
screens.
Michael focused on two pieces of equipment. One was the short packed bed ion
exchange system.  Because it uses much smaller resin granules the space
requirement is greatly reduced.

The other innovation is the micro media filter.  The much smaller particles
provide removal of much smaller particles than with the typical granular media
filter.
