Corrosion Materials was the Hot Topic on January 15

A two hour session provided insights on a number of corrosion issues.

Andy Bernard of Blome discussed a range of linings and also glass block for use in power plant air quality control systems. Glass block is a good option for chimneys and can be used on the inlet to the FGD scrubber with a special erosion resistant coating.

Dan Johnson, Omega Atomizers, explained the challenges of erosion and corrosion with the 400 mile an hour peripheral velocity of the atomizer in a spray drier FGD system. Even though maintenance is needed every few months, there are ways to minimize the efficiency loss of taking an atomizer out of service.

Robert Hawkins of Reinforced Plastic Systems indicated that FRP is finding success on a variety of applications including the scrubber shell. Some systems are using exterior steel supports with FRP ducts.

Don Kelly of Ashland was asked about the temperature resistance of FRP. He pointed out that stacks have operated for as long as nine months at 500°F and that the material can be used continuously at 400°F. FRP has been extensively used in recent FGD systems.

Jim Crum of Special Metals explained why INCOLOY Alloy 27-7MO has superior strength and nearly the corrosion resistance of C-276 at 50-60 percent of the price.

Ben Bogner of AOC discussed many of the positive attributes of FRP and in answer to questions indicated that they furnished the fire retardant resins as standard. Both Don and Ben agreed that fires in stacks occur during construction and not in operation.
