Big growth for U.S. oil and gas flow and treat.  U.S. oil and gas production is surging.  The U.S. can produce oil from shale and break even at $20/barrel.  At $3/mm btu shale gas is a profit generator. With the expansion of LNG export terminals, the U.S. LNG exports will be significant.  The flow and treat equipment and service revenue per barrel of tight oil is far greater than for conventional oil.  Shale derived gas flow and treat revenues are an order of magnitude greater than that generated by conventional extraction.

Part of the lower cost of is the improvement in flow and treat equipment and services.  Pump and valve improvements have been significant.  Purification and reuse of fracking water is now more cost effective thanks to the use of filter presses by Evoqua to cleanup the water initially used to purify the frac sand and then cleanup of the frac flow back after use.

The Mining IIoT and Remote O&M Outlay in 2017 will be $11 billion rising to $56 billion by 2030

Mining companies now spend $25 billion for treatment chemicals.  Twenty percent of these expenditures are in reality purchases of knowledge from the chemicals suppliers. This revenue from the Industrial Internet of Wisdom is considered to be part of the IIoT and Remote O&M opportunity. 

The mining industry is looking to IIoT and remote O&M for safety improvements. Manual measurements of oxygen and hazardous gases will give way to highly automated systems which also control ventilation fans to minimize energy consumption while maintaining safe levels of hazardous gases.   

Monitoring and control of the tailings storage minimizes the risk of a breach. The grinding and flotation circuits for some plants are monitored by FLSmidth from a remote monitoring center in Denmark.  They have also introduced a gain sharing program. A bonus is paid when costs are below the targeted level.

Companies such as Andritz, Evoqua and Xylem have a unique opportunity to leverage the technology of multiple divisions to focus on mining. Evoqua has hundreds of relevant products.  Xylem and Andritz have at least dozens. Xylem has the further advantage of extensive acquisitions of companies making monitors and sensors.

The challenge and the opportunity of IIoT is to interconnect all these technologies for synergistic operation of each.  The better the sensors the better the potential for synergistic operation.

The Industrial Internet of Wisdom (IIoW) will empower mining IIoT for maximum benefit.  This is easier said than done. When the valve starts to leak, the solution may be obvious but a comprehensive interconnection system to all the niche experts is needed.  For the most challenging problems there may only be a handful of people to provide an immediate answer.  If they can be utilized it may save lots of time and expense.
