AROUND THE WORLD

Global semiconductor sales will grow at a compound annual rate of nearly 10 percent from 2005 through 2008, reaching $309 billion in that year, according to the annual forecast of the Semiconductor Industry Assoc (SIA).  The forecast projects worldwide sales of microchips to reach $309 billion in 2008, an increase of 45 percent from the $213 billion record level of 2004……………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………..Chinese contract chip maker Hua Hong Group plans to spend roughly $1.6 billion to build an advanced factory.

………………………………The India Semiconductor Association (ISA) is drawing up plans for a semiconductor fabrication complex it is calling "FabCity." The wafer fab facility is expected to cost between $3 billion and $4 billion.

………………………………the number of new drugs originating from the biopharmaceutical sector has risen sharply. In 2003, biotechnology gave rise to 29 new compound approvals. In 2004, that number rose to 38, over 80 percent of all new drug approvals. This trend underscores what seems to be a growing reality:  innovation today is decidedly not the domain of large pharma but is instead dominated by biotechnology.
