Subject: China is the fastest growing Cleanroom Market

China does not yet have the quantity of Class l cleanrooms found in Taiwan or the U.S., but the market is expanding at all class sizes.  Here is some of the activity appearing in our monthly, Cleanroom Markets Updates.

STMicroelectronics and Hynix Semiconductor made an announcement about their intention to build a DRAM and NAND flash memory fab in Wuxi City in China's Jiangsu Province.  The two companies said that they have signed a joint-venture agreement, with the intention of setting up both 200-mm and 300-mm production lines.  When complete, the fab will employ approximately 1,500 people and will initially feature two manufacturing lines:  a 200-mm wafer line is scheduled to begin volume production in 2006, and a 300-mm wafer line will begin volume production in 2007.  Each line will produce, at capacity, 20,000 wafers per month.

Motorola has announced that it plans to invest $90 million in a new research facility in Beijing, China, as part of its long-term plans to grow its share of the mobile cell phone market in China — it currently is the second largest manufacturer of cell phones with 14.2 percent market share, behind Finland-based Nokia with 15.5 percent market share. Motorola expects China to contribute about 15 percent of its global revenue plans.
