Wastewater Superintendent Injured

Coraville, Iowa wastewater superintendent injured in sludge related explosion.

On December 28, Brian Lamansky suffered a broken leg and other injuries when there was a methane explosion at the sludge storage facility in a 1.5 million gallon tank.  The sludge is periodically removed. The explosion occurred during the removal process.

City Manager Kelly Hayworth didn’t know the full extent of Lamansky’s injuries but said they include a broken leg that will require pins to be inserted in it. He is in a lot of pain, but the injuries are not life-threatening and he should recover.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources regulates the treatment process and discharge at municipal wastewater plants but does not conduct safety inspections, said Dennis Ostwinkle, supervisor of the DNR’s Washington field office, which covers Johnson County.  The Coralville plant has not had any discharge violations over the past three years, he said.

Methane is a combustible and dangerous gas but it can also be a byproduct. We interviewed Ovivo relative to their gas holder just prior to WEF. You can view the recording through the link below:

Title: Mixers, Biogas production, and Ultrasound dewatering for wastewater plants

For anaerobic digestion, the LM™ (Linear Motion) Mixers offer solutions to the challenges of mixing wastewater in both thin sludge and thick sludge applications, providing homogeneous mixing by creating a turbulent liquid-core of micro and macro eddy currents. The result is less energy consumption and more energy produced in the form of biogas. A 3 membrane gas holder provides large and secure storage of biogas. The EWT™ Sonolyzer™ ultrasound technology achieves effective sludge reduction. The advantage of ultrasound treatment is that it does not require chemicals or extreme environmental conditions (either pressure or temperature). Ultrasound treatment disintegrates the sludge through a process known as “ultrasonic cavitation”.

NSF Has New Protocol

NSF has new protocol for sewage sludge sterilization

NSF International, a not-for-profit testing and certification organization committed to protecting the environment and public health, has developed a new protocol for organically-enhanced granular fertilizer production processes. The protocol evaluates granular fertilizers such as Unity-NS-Plus produced by Unity Envirotech LLC to verify that they are free of pathogens, noncombustible and meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) metal concentration requirements.

The new protocol, NSF Protocol P353: Sewage Sludge Sterilization in Organically-Enhanced Granular Fertilizer Production creates a means for fertilizer manufacturers who use biosolids or sewage sludge to demonstrate their products comply with all requirements. Sewage sludge refers to the solids separated during the treatment of municipal wastewater.* Specific requirements of NSF P353 include:

  • The manufacturing facility must prepare and implement a quality assurance plan consistent with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) guidelines and undergo periodic audits and sampling to verify that the fertilizer it produces has no detectable amounts of bacteria, viruses, spores and parasites including Helminth ova.
  • The organically-enhanced granular fertilizer, dust or fine particles must be noncombustible.
  • The fertilizer must meet metals concentrations established by the EPA regulation Part 503 rule for "Class A Exceptional Quality" products or better for metals (i.e., arsenic, cadmium, mercury, etc.) in biosolids.**

When you click on the above titles you see the details and the links to the recordings. Two of the InterWEBviews involved different approaches to providing the air for aeration. This is the biggest energy consumer in wastewater plants. So reducing energy is important. At the same time the proper amount and dispersion of the air is the key to biological processing. So both goals need to be balanced.

Here are the two approaches:

Title: Screw compressors for aeration with lower energy

The screw compressors now installed in many wastewater plants in Europe and some plants here in the U.S. are demonstrating that at no more capital cost/cfm energy consumption can be reduced by 30% or more and therefore greatly reducing life cycle costs of aeration.

Sacramento County Considering $2 Billion Wastewater Upgrade Project

The Central Valley region of the California Water Quality Control Board heard a plan recently that could triple Sacramento-area wastewater rates. The issue is whether Sacramento County's wastewater treatment plant should be upgraded to improve the quality of treated water that goes back into the Sacramento River. The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District said the plan could cost up to $2 billion.

Engineers told water officials that based on years of study, Sacramento County needs to reduce the amount of ammonia and other pathogens going into the river and south to the fragile Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The proposal could boost monthly wastewater treatment bills in Sacramento County from $20 to $60.Board members will vote on the plan between now and the first of the year.

$6.2 Billion Market

$6.2 billion market for sedimentation and centrifugation equipment in 2011

The market for sedimentation and centrifugation equipment will exceed $6.2 billion in 2011 up from $6.1 billion in 2010. This is the new forecast appearing in the continuously updated on line Sedimentation and Centrifugation: World Markets published by the McIlvaine Company.

Decanter, disc, and other centrifuges will account for $2.6 billion in sales revenue. This will be slightly less than the clarifiers and thickeners at $2.7 billion
