13,500 People Attended Singapore Water in July

This global platform for water solutions attracted a record of some 13,500 participants from 99 countries/regions. This marks a growth in attendance of almost 60 percent since the inaugural event in 2008. The Water Expo saw close to 70 percent growth in exhibition space and a 70 percent increase in the number of exhibiting companies over the inaugural year of 2008. Over 600 companies took part in this year’s Water Expo, which attracted six new international pavilions from Australia, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Milwaukee Water Council (USA), the Water Environment Federation (USA), and the Maryland-Asia Environmental Partnership (USA); taking the total number of pavilions to fifteen. The total value of announcements for projects awarded, tenders, investments and R&D MOUs reached S$2.9 billion.

Mr. Michael Toh, Managing Director of the Singapore International Water Week, said “We are extremely pleased with the strong industry support for the Singapore International Water Week. Water Management remains a vital focus area for governments and industries in today’s challenging global landscape, which is marked by growing population and rapid urbanization. The Water Week’s ability in bringing together global water leaders from the public sector, the private sector and academia augurs well for the growing global water industry in ensuring a continual dialogue and identifying governance, business and technological solutions to address this common challenge.”

The first ever U.K. Pavilion was supported by the U.K. Trade and Investment Department, responsible for promoting export and import, and hosted by British Water, the trade association for the U.K. water and wastewater industry.  Bridget Orr, British Water Marketing Executive said, “We have been very impressed by the caliber of the other exhibitors and the professionalism of the exhibition organization. Our companies have made excellent contacts with key utilities and companies across the region. We look forward to developing the relationships we have made at Singapore International Water Week and to continue to showcase and share U.K. expertise and experience in innovation, technology, high quality manufacturing and asset management.”

The focus on new technology and innovation was a particular highlight for this year’s event, in line with Singapore’s position as a key driver in the research and development of new water solutions, the inaugural Water Innovations@SIWW showcased five new technologies spawned in Singapore, while TechXchange, provided a platform connecting potential inventors with the researchers behind these technologies.

Dr. Chen Zhong, Associate Professor and Assistant Chair (Undergraduates) at the School of Materials Science & Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, said “The TechXchange workshop provided an excellent opportunity to bring our R&D technologies to the market. The interaction also enables researchers to stay more focused on critical issues facing the industry in their future research.”

Investors attending the workshop echoed this endorsement.  Dr. Helge Daebel, Senior Specialist, Emerald Ventures said, “The workshop offered good insights into very interesting technical developments from the research organizations in Singapore. What needs to happen next is to match them with a strong entrepreneurial mind-set. During the panel discussion, industry thought leaders shared stimulating comments in that direction.”

In addition, more than thirty new products and technologies made their regional and international debut at the Water Expo’s Launch@SIWW innovation showcase, signaling a strong endorsement of the Water Week as an important platform for companies looking to promote their new products to key markets in the world.

Pentair Displays Combined Products after Acquisition of Former Norit Division

Pentair, for the first time, exhibited together with Pentair Water and showed its integrated water solutions to the global water industry.  In May 2011, Pentair had taken over a division of privately held Norit Holding B.V., consisting of seven companies, among which are the water technology companies X-Flow B.V., Haffmans B.V., Filtrix B.V. and Nijhuis Pompen B.V.

The new members to the Pentair family offer synergies in the field of advanced water technology. Pentair is able to provide unique packaged solutions which provide customers added value in terms of lifetime, performance, maintenance and service. One example that was showcased at SIWW is the expansion of Pentair’s desalination portfolio:

·       The advanced pump technology of Pentair Nijhuis and Pentair Fairbanks Morse maximize the desalination system efficiency.

·       Pentair X-Flow’s ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, dedicated to the pre-treatment of seawater, are engineered to maximize system performance and increase the lifespan of the RO membranes by reducing system fouling. This is a valuable addition to Pentair’s existing pre-filtration portfolio, which includes AquaLine liquid filtration, automatic multi-media and cartridge filtration systems.

The Pentair companies cooperate closely with PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, on three projects in the area. During the SIWW, Pentair organizes tours for its VIP customers from all over the world to see Pentair’s advanced water technology solutions in the Singapore area:

·       Pentair X-Flow’s UF technology at the Lower Seletar Waterworks

·       Pentair X-Flow’s Airlift™ MBR Megablock at Changi Water Reclamation Plant

·       Pentair Nijhuis’ high efficiency pumps at the Marina Barrage

Singapore is investing strongly in research and technology. The Singapore government has identified water as a new growth sector and has invested S$330 million for R&D on water since 2006. Within 40 years, the country has developed a diversified and sustainable water supply strategy —the Four National Taps, which consists of water from local catchment areas, imported water, high-grade reclaimed water known as NEWater and desalinated water.

Pentair Nijhuis displayed the fish-friendly pump solution at SIWW.  What is particularly special about this pump is the shape of the impeller, which creates a favorable flow in the water that allows the fish to get through the pump safely, in spite of the relatively high rotational speed. Furthermore, there is more space between the impeller blades than with conventional pumps, which considerably reduces the chance of the fish and eels being hit.

Black & Veatch Event Identifies Water Pressures Industry Must Solve at Singapore Water Week

Pricing water to reflect its true value; encouraging innovation that reduces costs, improves efficiency and drives new revenue streams; and educating the public, particularly youth, on the importance of water are three of today’s most challenging pressures for the world’s water leaders, according to initial findings from the “Water Pressures” workshop at Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2011.

Organized in partnership with Black & Veatch as part of the SIWW Water Leaders Summit, the workshop featured approximately 110 global leaders from more than 20 countries. Twelve internationally renowned chairpersons led delegates through a total of 25 rapid-fire conversations focused on three pressures that the water sector is facing today:  Policy Pressures, Innovation Pressures and Public Pressures.

At the conclusion of the event, each chairperson summarized key findings from their groups’ discussions. These findings included the following recommendations for addressing all three pressures:

  1. Oil the wheels of innovation by creating policies that promote investment in new technologies to reduce costs, improve efficiency and drive new revenue streams
  2. Collaborate with technology partners to determine the most cost-effective, creative solutions
  3. Allow for additional investment in water by utilizing technology to improve revenue collection and detection of non-revenue water
  4. Ensure the price of water reflects its true value
  5. Engage multiple stakeholders in designing transparent processes for mitigating policy pressures
  6. Create the political environment that facilitates the implementation of difficult but necessary water policies
  7. Don’t underestimate community support for tough water policies
  8. Communicate how water is a critical resource by having strong leaders deliver messages in the right format with the appropriate language
  9. Remember that changing public perception is an important first step for technology adoption
  10. Educate the public, particularly youth, about the close links between water and health and the impact of water on energy and food

“We’ve listened to and captured nearly a dozen hours of invaluable information that was shared during the roundtable discussions today,” said Dan McCarthy, President and CEO of Black & Veatch’s global water business, who moderated the event. “This Singapore conversation helped identify solutions to these key challenges that the industry must solve in a collaborative way.”

Titled “Water Pressures” – How to Adapt and Lead in a Changing Urban Environment, the workshop’s detailed findings will be used to create a white paper summarizing how leaders in the water sector are handling current challenges. A full set of results will be made available to the public on www.waterdialogue.com. The event is part of the Black & Veatch’s award winning, global Water Dialogue series.

PUB Singapore is testing Dow’s 16 inch FILMTEC Membrane Module

Dow Water Solutions and PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, signed an agreement in October to test-bed Dow’s next-generation FILMTEC™ membranes for use in water reclamation.

The joint collaborative research effort, which commenced at PUB’s Bedok NEWater plant, is expected to validate preliminary data indicating that Dow’s newer 16-inch FILMTEC membrane modules are more efficient in water reclamation than current standard 8-inch modules. Once validated, the next-generation membrane technology will allow for more efficient and affordable water reclamation and reuse processes at large-scale treatment facilities.

The 16-inch FILMTEC Reverse Osmosis membrane elements from Dow have an active surface area of 1,725 square feet – more than four times that of the standard 8-inch element currently used in full-scale reverse osmosis systems for water reuse. The increase in active surface area will greatly decrease the number of membrane elements needed for the same quantity of reclaimed water, reducing the system’s footprint and equipment needs and providing capital cost savings for plant operators. The reduction in the number of reverse osmosis elements and trains also is expected to deliver savings in maintenance and operation costs due to a seven-fold decrease in the number of permeate o-ring seals.

The joint effort involved building an advanced reverse osmosis system. PUB and Dow Water Solutions are conducting a controlled parallel study of the 16-inch FILMTEC membranes versus a conventional 8-inch reverse osmosis system to evaluate key aspects of membrane performance. The companies are examining the handling (membrane loading and unloading), transportation and storage of the larger-diameter membranes; ways to balance capital and operating costs; and optimum system design parameters. The system features a secure, remote monitoring data acquisition capability.

The world market for microfiltration, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis (RO) will reach $10.8 billion in 2015 up from $8.6 billion this year.  East Asia will be the biggest market in 2015 with 28 percent of the world purchases. NAFTA will be the second largest region with 24 percent of the purchases.

Despite its small population, the Middle East will account for 11 percent of all revenues. The reason is that desalination investments are soaring.  Israel, facing what could be the worst water crisis in its 63-year history, has launched a massive desalination project. The Finance Ministry has approved the construction and operation of a desalination plant in Soreq in southern Israel which will be the second largest plant in the world.  Many other Middle Eastern countries are also turning to desalination for drinking water for the population as well as for industrial uses.  Dow Chemical just announced that it will manufacture its FilmTec™ RO elements in Saudi Arabia.

Membranes are playing a growing role in purifying non-saline drinking water and municipal wastewater for reuse.  The use in the oil and gas industry is also expanding as hydro fracturing gains momentum.

There is considerable integration going on in the industry.  Chemical companies are expanding into membranes and equipment companies are expanding into chemicals. Aquatech, a systems company, just announced a strategic investment in WEX, a provider of water treatment chemicals in India.

BASF, one of the world’s largest chemical companies, has signed agreements which will position it to provide the optimum combination of chemicals and membranes.

Life Cycle Cost Calculation Software for Storage Tanks Shows that Stainless Can be Best

Industeel has created a user friendly software program which provides a comparison of investment and life cycle costs for storage tanks.

The CalRes software has been developed to facilitate a quick comparison of the initial investment cost for high capacity storage tanks fabricated from different materials, including coated carbon steel and stainless steel grades. The program also allows you to compute a detailed cost analysis of the maintenance costs over the expected life of the equipment.

The CalRes software is based on the American standard API 650 and the French CODRES code for the wall thickness calculation. These standards, developed for the storage of oil based products, may be used for storage tanks for other products or for other industries. The development of this software has been carried out with the technical assistance and the contribution of companies specializing in each stage of tank manufacture.

The configuration studied for the cost comparison program represents a vertical, cylindrical tank, with a flat bottom and a self-supporting cone or dome roof.

This program will show that in many cases the use of stainless steels for building storage tanks may constitute a very competitive solution when compared to building tanks in carbon steels which require protection by painting the external surface and coating the internal surface.

Due to the increased mechanical properties of duplex stainless steel grades, it is possible to reduce the tank wall thicknesses and consequently obtain important cost savings related to material, welding and erection costs.  http://www.industeel.info/services/technical-support/calres.aspx.
