A 400 MW plant would have 4 pumps and 1 spare each at 35,000 gpm, making 350 gpm/MW (pump sizing factor). There are 3000 cfm/MW. So this is 0.116 gpm per cfm or 116 gpm/1000 cfm. This is the flow for a 95% efficient spray tower. The flow for a tray tower would be about 60% of this number. On the other hand to reach 98%, the flow might have to be 50% higher or .160 gpm/cfm. Some suppliers can now furnish pumps at 50,000 gpm, thereby reducing the number of pumps required. In addition to Weir, KSB, and Duechting, several Chinese manufacturers can supply these large, abrasive-resistant pumps.
