STERLING GRAY – URS CORPORATION

BIO: Mr. Gray is currently a Business Development and Technology Manager in the Process Technologies group at URS Corporation, located in Austin, Texas. In this role, he has been responsible for the development, commercialization, and optimization of the SBS Injection SO3 removal process for application to utility coal-fired power plants.
ABSTRACT: Improved Air Preheater Performance via SO3 Control
Thermal energy recovery by an air preheater is typically limited by the presence of sulfuric acid and other fouling compounds in the flue gas stream. By eliminating these compounds from the gas upstream of the air preheater, its thermal performance and efficiency can be dramatically improved. Recent long-term testing by a leading air preheater manufacturer has shown successful operation at flue gas exit temperatures as low as 220°F, providing up to three percent improvement in plant heat rate and energy efficiency. Results from testing and an economic analysis will be presented.

BIO: John Guffre is a professional engineer and is the Research Scientist for Paragon Airheater Technologies. He is a graduate of the Rutgers University College of Engineering and has over 35 years of both Utility and private industry experience in the fields of boiler efficiency and air pollution control.
John started his career as a Performance and Results Engineer at the Brunner Island Station of Pennsylvania Power and Light Company and, throughout his career, has parlayed his experience in power plant operations into the development and implementation of practical methods for improving power plant performance.
ABSTRACT: The presentation will cover the selection of materials and coatings for Regenerative Air Heaters to mitigate the corrosion and fouling issues associated with ABS and acid deposition.
