DAVID GRAY – METTLER-TOLEDO THORNTON

BIO: David Gray is a Senior Product Manager at Mettler-Toledo Thornton with over 35 years’ experience in the design and application of process analytical and control instrumentation. He has authored numerous papers on the measurement and control of conductivity, pH, ORP, sodium, TOC and dissolved oxygen. He has chaired various task groups on the ASTM D19 Water Committee and worked on the ASME Committee responsible for the Performance Test Code on Steam & Water Purity in the Power Cycle
Abstract
ABSTRACT: New technology for monitoring cycle chemistry will be presented, covering on-line analytical measurements of conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, sodium and silica. BIO: Joe is Director of Marketing, and Power Industry Sales Manager, for Chemtrac, Inc. in Norcross, Georgia. He received a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana State University.
Joe began his career in sales and support for industrial water treatment systems (clarification, filtration, ion exchange, and chemical feed). He joined Betz Laboratories as a technical sales representative, and was based in New Orleans. He moved into a technical marketing role within the pharmaceutical industry, and then returned to industrial water treatment in 2006 with Chemtrac, focusing on corrosion product transport monitoring and pretreatment optimization in the power industry.
Joe has written, and contributed to, several particle detection related papers, and has made corrosion product transport monitoring presentations at various international forums and conferences.
ABSTRACT: Continuous Real-Time Corrosion Product Transport Monitoring using Particle Counter Instrumentation
The adverse effects of “particulate” material in steam cycle waters are frequently seen throughout the power generation process. Steam cycle corrosion products (transient metal oxides) can lead to deposition and equipment failure. This presentation introduces basic technologies used for continuous detection of insoluble particles at very low concentrations. When such monitoring methods are utilized, real-time corrosion product transport measurement can be implemented as a potential parameter for controlling the power plant cycle.

Performance comparison data of the two technologies in steam cycle applications will be presented. Finally comparisons along with advantages / disadvantages will be discussed.
