JOHN KOLDE AND JOHN DARROW – W. L. GORE

 

 

BIOS:

John Darrow has a BS in Civil Engineering from Drexel University with over 40 years of experience in air pollution control and has been employed by W.L. Gore and Associates’ industrial filtration business for the last 30 years. 

 

Jeff Kolde has Chemical and Environmental Engineering degrees from Penn State University, and has worked for W.L. Gore and Associates for 18 years in various energy-related fields, and most recently in the Mercury Control Technology team.

 

ABSTRACT: New Fixed-Bed Approach to Mercury Control in Power Plants

W.L. Gore and Associates, Inc, leader in particulate filtration for nearly 40 years, is now commercializing a new fixed-bed sorbent technology for controlling mercury emissions from combustion applications.  This “end-of-pipe” solution provides a simple and effective way to continuous capture both elemental and oxidized mercury from flue gas streams for typically several years at a time without requiring regeneration.  Drawbacks of activated carbon injection such as fly ash contamination and interference by SO3 are completely avoided.  In addition to very high mercury removal efficiency, SOx emissions are reduced as a co-benefit. 

 

 

MARCUS SYLVESTER – MIDWEST ENERGY CORP.

 

BIO: Mr. Marcus Sylvester is Vice President of Sales for Midwest Energy Emissions Corp.  Marc is a veteran sales professional (20+ years) in the air pollution control segment with various roles in sales & sales management at Johnson Controls, Nalco Chemical Company, and Fuel Tech Inc. 

 

ABSTRACT: Midwest Energy Emissions Corp (ME2C) is a global company with a focus on mercury capture and reduction utilizing patented technologies to control mercury emissions from major utility and industrial boilers.  ME2C has worked closely with the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) of the University of North Dakota to develop and deploy the best performing and most cost effective mercury control technologies in the world. ME2C will discuss its Sorbent Enhancement Additives technology with its most recent commercial installation. This program is designed to achieve greater than 90% capture at less than 1/2 the cost of Brominated Activated Carbon.

 

James Wright - Clean Air Engineering

 

BIO: Mr. Wright has been with CleanAir for 19 years and works out of their Pittsburgh, PA office. He heads up CleanAir’s New Products division, and has focused his efforts over the last few years on commercial development of the MET-80, a sorbent trap-based mercury monitoring system for coal-fired utilities and other combustion processes. Previously, he managed CleanAir’s source testing operations corporate-wide. He has been involved with the source testing business in one form or another for over 25 years and is a Qualified Source Testing Individual under the SES QSTI/QSTO Program. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech.

 

 

BOBBY CHEN – SHAW GROUP

 

 

BIO:  Bobby Chen has two bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Computer

Information Systems from Western Kentucky University. He was the Assistant Director at

WKU’s Energy Research Center. After WKU, he was hired by University of Tennessee

as a Senior Research Associate. Now he is a Client Program Manager with the Shaw

Group. Throughout his professional career in the environmental-related research and services, he has personally involved in full scale post-combustion system evaluations for 196 coal-fired units for NOx, SOx, Particle Matters (PM 2.5/10/ Condensable PM), mercury and other metal emissions analyses.
