MARK PASTORE – EES, INC.

 

Mark Pastore

 

BIO: Mr. Pastore joined the company in 2003 with the primary responsibility of building a new business for EES in the coal power generation market segment. In this capacity he oversees the development of new technology including the CoalTreat® and CoalCat™ product platforms and resulting Intellectual Property for the mitigation of acid gas emissions, slagging and fouling in coal-fired boilers. He has been working in the fuel oil additive industry for over fifteen years. His experience includes responsibilities as diverse as Research Chemist, Global Market Manager for a Fortune 500 chemical producer, Sales Representative and most recently, VP of a major gas turbine compressor cleaner service company. During his career, Mr. Pastore developed several products including a unique high performance organo-metallic fuel additive, and has patents pending for the CoalTreat product line. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from SUNY-Purchase and is a member of the PRB Users Group and the American Coal Council.

 

ABSTRACT: EES will briefly discuss stack test measurement methods for SO3, NH3, PM, and NOx, along with concerns and issues as they relate to accurate and repeatable data collection and the decision-making process. Areas to be covered include common sampling mistakes/shortcuts and their impact on results.

 

EES has been in the emissions testing business for over 15 years. During this presentation we will offer the perspective of a testing company on the accuracy of stack testing methods. Our focus will be the importance of understanding the test methods being employed and the way the tests are actually run. This will ensure consistent and accurate data.

 

 

JOHN JEFFREY – EES, INC.

 

BIO: John Jeffery is an environmental consultant assisting both industry and governmental agency clients in the areas of stack sampling, test observations, method development, control device/ process audits, and the development of alternate approaches to pollution control. Over the years he has worked in over 14 countries, trained more than 3,000 people, and has been conducting stack testing since the summer of 1974.

 

 

KRAG PETTERSON – PALL CORPORATION

 

BIO: Krag Petterson is currently the Principle Product Engineer for Pall Corporation’s Xact line of metals monitors.  Prior to coming to Pall Krag worked as the Director of Technology for Cooper Environmental Services (CES). In that role he participated in the development of the Xact and oversaw CES’s contract research projects. Krag also worked for several years as a researcher at the California Institute of Technology. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of Puget Sound.

 

ABSTRACT: The Xact Multi Metals CEMS as an Alternative to Monitoring with a PM CEMS and a Mercury CEMS

The recently proposed National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants from Coal and Oil-fired Electric Utility Steam Generating Units (Utility MACT) requires continuous monitoring of both PM (as a surrogate for non-Hg HAP metals) and mercury on coal-fired power plants.  In addition, EPA has proposed individual and total non-Hg metal HAP limits as an alternative to using PM as a surrogate.  The Xact 640 is a multi-metals CEMS that offers the possibility of compliance monitoring of both mercury and non-mercury HAP directly with a single CEMS rather than using both a mercury CEMS and a PM CEMS.  Previously, the Xact has been approved by the EPA for compliance monitoring on a hazardous waste incinerator and has passed a mercury RATA on a coal-fired power plant. Currently, the Xact design is being modified and optimized for mercury and non-mercury HAP metals on coal fired power plants. 

 

 

DAN KIETZER - SICK MAIHAK

BIO:
Dan Kietzer is a Business Development Manager for SICK Process Automation, a leading supplier of CEM and Process Analytical equipment. Mr. Kietzer has worked for SICK MAIHAK for thirteen years, serving in many rolls including three (3) years as a Regional Sales Manager, four (4) years as Engineering Manager, and three (3) years as a Project Manager. Mr. Kietzer received a B.A in Physic, with a minor in Mathematics, from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN.

 

ABSTRACT:  SO3 control using dry sorbent injection offers benefits in both lower emissions and less corrosion to critical plant components. Until recently, a real time monitor to provide feedback control of the DSI was not available. Real time SO3/H2SO4 analyzers have been installed and tested in coal fired plants in the US and can have been used to control the injection process and reduce sorbent usage. An overview of the technology and performance will be discussed.

 

GREGORY COLEMAN – GEOSYNTECS

 

 

 

BIO: Gregory Coleman is currently the Director of Geosyntecs Air Practice.  Mr. Coleman is focused on the combustion sector providing a holistic management approach to environmental issues.  Mr. Coleman has more than 10 years consulting experience with industry and utilities globally on environmental performance in air emissions and pollution control.  Mr. Coleman specializes in: NOx management; SO2 scrubbing and byproducts; mercury testing and control technology; SO3 measurement and mitigation; fine particulate measurement and control; application of EPA reference methods from 40 CFR Part 60, Appendix A to numerous industrial and commercial types of air emissions sources; BIF methods for hazardous waste facilities; and SW-846 emissions test methods. 

 

SHAWN NELEZEN - AVOGADRO

 

 

 

BIO: Mr. Nelezen is a Client Account Manager and Senior Project Manager for Avogadro. Shawn specializes in managing corporate accounts and the most sophisticated Avogadro clients. He strives to help his clients meet the state and federally mandated emissions requirements in a safe, timely and efficient manner.  Shawn has been involved in the source testing industry since 1998 and provides technical oversight and on the job training to project managers and technicians.  Shawn specializes in large, complex test programs and regularly oversees numerous air toxic emission tests at facilities across the United States.  Shawn focuses on developing business relationships, preparing and administering budgets, writing protocols, training test teams and preparing technical reports.  Shawn is a member of the Source Evaluation Society and successfully passed all the Qualified Source Testing Individual (QSTI) exams, including metals.

 

Shawn graduated in 1997 with a B.S. degree in geology from St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin.  He started his career the following year at Braun Intertec in Minneapolis.  He also worked for Mostardi-Platt Environmental and GE Energy Services as a project manager where he performed a multitude of emissions test programs across the United States.

 

ABSTRACT: I intend to discuss the definition and types of particulate matter, recent changes in particulate matter test methodology, the implications of test method on results including interferences, and detection limits relative to the proposed MACT limits.

 

 

ED BURGHER – AVAGADRO

 

BIO: Ed is the Business Development / Technical Sales Manager for Avogadro Environmental Corporation, a leading provider of source emissions testing and monitoring support services. He is responsible for establishing and implementing the company marketing and sales strategy to build Avogadro Environmental Corporation’s position in the regulatory compliance-driven source monitoring and testing industries. In this role, Mr. Burgher works to develop and maintain the type of customer-centric relationships that serves as the underpinning for Avogadro’s key business philosophy. Ed has more than 25 years of diversified experience in the environmental regulatory compliance and environmental measurements industry including roles as an industrial compliance manager, as an environmental consultant and in developing and marketing products and services used in the environmental measurements industry.

 

ABSTRACT:  Meeting Stationary Source PM Mass Measurement Requirements – Is it Possible?

 

Sources have been required to measure mass emissions of particulate matter for decades. Over the years, the understanding of particulate matter (PM) characteristics and behavior has increased considerably along with the number and complexity of PM measurement methods. The introduction of NAAQS standards for PM10 and more recently, PM2.5, generated the need to understand what comprises each and how to quantify the emissions of different sizes of particles. Most recently, several NESHAP / MACT standards have been proposed or promulgated that include significant changes in stationary source emission PM measurement and monitoring requirements. PM mass measurement methodologies, such as EPA Method 5, have been around since the EPA instituted the requirements but now our lexicon related to stationary source PM measurement now includes Total PM, Condensable PM, PM 10, PM2.5, Fine Particulate, PM CEMS, PS-11 and Method 5, Methods 201, 201a, 202. This discussion will focus on making sense of these terms as they relate to the source owner, the stack tester, the various MACT emissions standards, testing and monitoring requirements, and how one ensures capturing valid, accurate and precise PM emission measurements for compliance purposes.
