JIM SUTTON – ALSTOM POWER

BIO: Jim Sutton, Director at Alstom Power. Mr. Sutton has 30 years experience in the Power industry and is a Professional Engineer in the state of Connecticut. He is a leader in bringing new technology to improve performance of coal-fired electric power plants and is holder of five US patents. One of his products, a system for NOx reduction, was selected by Popular Science Magazine as one of the top 100 inventions in Science and Industry for that year. Recently, Mr. Sutton has focused on smart products, energy efficiency, and use of data models to improve electric power plant reliability.
ABSTRACT: CO2 reduction through Energy Efficiency in Coal-fired Boilers
Increasingly, energy efficiency is a focus of reducing CO2 emissions from coal-fired boilers. The presentation covers how much CO2 could potentially be avoided, breakdown of areas in a power plant that can be improved, and some case studies of Alstom efficiency improve-ment products.
JIM STAUDT – ANDOVER TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS
ABSTRACT: Jim Staudt will provide an overview of ongoing activities in the Greenhouse Gas mitigation area, which particular focus on US EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Options Database (G-MOD). G-MOD is a database that will span multiple industry sectors. Dr. Staudt will describe some of the features and functionality that are planned for G-MOD.
JOHN WHEELDON – EPRI / SOUTHERN COMPANY
BIO: John Wheeldon is a Technical Executive in EPRI’s Generation Division and is current on loan to the DOE-funded National Carbon Capture Center where he leads the Science and Technology team.
ABSTRACT: CO2 emissions are expected to become restricted in the near future and as a consequence coal-fired power plant technology must re-invent itself if it is to remain a major provider of electricity. Raising generating efficiency offers a “no-regrets” approach to lowering emissions of CO2/MWh. The presentation will discuss progress being made in raising generating efficiency up t 50% (HHV) and identifying how the technology might be demonstrated.
