BOYLE – POWERSPAN
BIO: Phil Boyle joined Powerspan in 1996 and is the company’s President and Chief Operating Officer. In this role, Phil provides technical oversight of the Company’s engineering, R&D, and commercial project activities. Prior to joining Powerspan, Phil spent 20 years with the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program as an engineer and program manager. Phil holds a B.S. in Engineering Physics and a Master's of Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, both attained at Cornell University. Phil also holds an M.B.A. from the University of New Hampshire.
ABSTRACT: Phil will summarize the company's experience with its multi-pollutant control technology (SO2, fine PM, and oxidized mercury) and its carbon capture technology, which can follow a conventional SO2 scrubbing technology, such as a limestone forced-oxidation SO2 scrubber, or following Powerspan’s multi-pollutant control technology. Phil will also summarize the results of a recent independent technology assessment.
DAVID HELM – SARGENT & LUNDY
ABSTRACT: EPA and Congress are developing new rules that will require additional SO2, NOx, and hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions reductions from power plants. Mr. Helm will discuss current and future emissions reduction initiatives that directly impact coal-fired power plants. These initiatives include the Regional Haze Rule, CAIR Replacement Rule, changes in the NAAQS, and Utility MACT.
ROD GRAVLEY – TRI-MER CORP.

BIO: With an educational background in chemistry and physics, Rod worked for twenty years in the air pollution control industry for one of the largest engineering consulting firms in the world. During that time he created an air toxics laboratory that specialized in the characterization of industrial sources for both particulate and gas phase species and executed projects focused on improving the performance of various control technologies. This work led to eventually founding and spearheading the technology development of several air pollution systems at an independent subsidiary. Success in that endeavor lead to his current position as Technology Director for Tri-Mer Corporation, one of the worldwide leaders in pollution control innovation. Rod lives in Corvallis, Oregon.
ABSTRACT: Tri-Mer Corporation is introducing the UltraTemp Filtration system to the North American market. With an installed base in Europe of over 400 applications, the filter technology is based on a new generation of ceramic-coated fibers. This allows operation of the system up to 1650°F, while consistently achieving outlet concentrations below 0.001 grains/dscf, even with submicron PM loadings greater than 1.0 - 2.0 grains/dscf. At the same time SO2 can be removed with sorbent injection. Most importantly, a variation of the filter has SCR catalyst manufactured into the filter itself, allowing simultaneous removal of NOx, up to 95 percent, with simple urea injection. The result is a single system that can remove PM, SOx, and NOx at very high levels of efficiency. Mercury removal is also an option.

HEIDI DAVIDSON – SOLVAY CHEMICALS

BIO: Heidi Davidson is Technical Development Engineer for Solvay Chemicals’ SOLVAir Products Group, headquartered in Houston, TX. In this capacity, she supports SOLVAir Select product trials for efficiency and effectiveness evaluations, specifically for treatment of SO2, SO3, HCl, and HF. She also works with potential and existing customers to evaluate implementation of dry sorbent injection systems at their sites.
Heidi has several years of experience in environmental and process engineering. She holds an MBA from Indiana University Kelley School of Business, Bloomington, IN; and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, IN.
ABSTRACT: Multi-Emission Control
Solvay Chemicals, Inc. and SOLVAir® Products has long history with many years of experience providing multi-pollutant control solutions to the utility sector. Using dry sorbent injection (DSI) with sodium bicarbonate or trona, the objective is to control acid gases, including HCl, HF, SO2, and SO3, while enhancing mercury capture. DSI provides a low-capital alternative for treating flue gas at power plants.
PAUL FARBER – SARGENT & LUNDY
BIO: Mr. Farber has more than 35 years of professional environmental engineering experience and is currently a Senior Environmental Specialist in Sargent & Lundy’s Environmental Technology Group. This includes all phases of environmental engineering from research through permitting and control system startup. Since joining Sargent & Lundy, Mr. Farber has been involved in many projects. These include being the responsible engineer for the upgrades and additions to over 12,000 MW of FGD systems on new and existing coal fired plants. Mr. Farber’s responsibilities include developing environmental control options for fossil fuel power plants, design of emissions control systems for particulates and SO2, field inspections and technical assistance of emissions control systems, and assisting clients with permit preparation.
