TERENCE AKE – BABCOCK POWER
BIO: Terence R. Ake is the product manager for Turbosorp®
Circulating Dry Scrubbers at Babcock Power, Inc. – a leading provider of
technology for clean power, steam generators for utilities and independent power
producers, and industrial and waste-to-energy boilers. He has twenty-five years
of experience in combustion technology, SCRs, and scrubbers with Babcock Power.
He happens to be involved with emission testing activity for a Babcock Power
dry scrubber and a wet scrubber at the time of this "Hot Topic". So he feels he
can offer useful insights.
ABSTRACT: After the U.S. Supreme Court remanded the
Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR) in December 2008, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) started developing new rules for deep cuts in sulfur
dioxide (SO2) emissions from coal-fired power stations. The EPA told
the Court that it would take two years to issue the new rules. In an action
closely related to CAIR, the EPA will also impose the first ever federal
requirements for coal power stations to reduce mercury emissions. While new
rules are being written, there is a brief opportunity for a power utility to
plan emissions controls for their power stations. There are two distinct options
for scrubbing SO2: wet versus dry. The choice of scrubbing
technology depends on whether the boiler is new, or the age of the boiler, the
space constraints, the availability of water, and other site specific facts.
It’s important to consider the use of the byproduct. The co-benefits of a
technology to remove sulfur trioxide, mercury, and flyash may become important
to answer the question of whether a boiler can be built or must be retired.

BIO: Greg is the President of Pollution Control Services, Inc. PCS was started in 1998 to provide experienced, on-site, consultant services for Wet & Dry FGD Systems, WESP, ESP, Baghouse, SCR and Dry Chemical Injection Systems. Greg started in this industry 1968 with MicroPul and has been heavily involved in the air pollution control industry ever since.
ABSTRACT: Wet versus Dry FGD control presentation will focus on the basic differences for the two (2) well proven control technologies effect upon the operating parameters for existing coal fired generators. Understanding how numerous boiler modifications and fuel supply changes can either positively or negatively affect plant operational costs with both technologies. Finally how the two (2) basic technologies compare over the equipment life cycle in regards O&M cost.
Pete Honeycutt - Kiewit
BIO: Mr. Honeycutt has been the manager of air quality control systems and process engineering for Kiewit Power for over 2 years. Before joining Kiewit he spent 10 years with C-E Environmental Systems Diversio (Alstom) and 17 years with Southern Company in Research and Environmental Affairs. In this capacity, he provided staff chemical/process engineering support for new power generation projects, environmental/technology research and development projects, and fossil-fired power plant major environmental retrofit projects. Work included project development and management activities, construction management, conceptual and process engineering for SO2, mercury, SNCR and other air quality control projects. Specification development and evaluation of major power plant process equipment and systems, and project support activities related to AQCS fabrication and construction was also part his responsibility.
