Kim Chaffee – Ametek

 

 

Bio:  Kim Chaffee holds a BA in Engineering & Applied Physics from Harvard University and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley.  From 1992 to 1999, he was Eastern Regional Sales Manager for Altech USA, an integrator of Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems.  From 1999 to 2008, he has been Southeastern Regional Sales Manager for Land Instruments International/later AMETEK Land Inc., a leading supplier of opacity monitors and other combustion and environmental analyzers.  (AMETEK Process Instruments purchased Land Instruments in June 2006.)  In September 2008, Mr. Chaffee was named Eastern US & Eastern Canadian Regional Sales Manager for the Land Combustion & Environmental Division of AMETEK Process Instruments.

 

Abstract:  Opacity monitors have been used for nearly 40 years to monitor dust concentrations from industrial and power plant smoke stacks.  Particulates from smoke stacks, particularly small particles 2.5 microns in diameter and smaller, have been linked to increased mortality and impaired health conditions, such as asthma, allergies and lung cancer.  Modern opacity monitors work by measuring light absorbance, which is a surrogate measurement for dust concentration.  Kim Chaffee will describe the theory and practice of opacity monitoring, which is a critical component of air pollution measurement and control.  

 

 

Todd Melick – PROMECON USA Inc.

 

PROMECON provides process instrumentation for measuring pulverized coal flow, particle size analysis, air flow and high temperature gas streams, and unburned carbon-in-ash.  Improves boiler performance, emissions, and both fly ash quality and consistency.

 

 

Todd joined PROMECON in September 2003 to establish the North American office in Orrville, Ohio.  PROMECON provides a number of process flow measurement instruments which can be applied to optimize a wide variety of industrial processes. Before joining PROMECON, Todd worked for Babcock & Wilcox and General Electric. His duties were focused on fossil fuel combustion and Low NOx Burners for 23 years.
