DTE Monroe Gets Further Approval for Environmental Upgrades

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment gave DTE Energy the green light to invest more than $1 billion more in FGD and SCR equipment at its Monroe Power Plant. When completed sometime in 2014, the project is expected to cut an estimated 49.2 million pounds of NO_x, 7.5 million pounds of particulate matter, 215.9 million pounds of SO₂ and 1400 pounds of lead. In addition to the pollution control equipment, changes to the boilers include increasing the use of sub-bituminous coal and adding the combustion of petroleum coke; upgrading the coal-handling systems; installing petroleum coke-handling systems, installing limestone- and gypsum-handling systems, and installing diesel fuel-fired quench pumps. Two of the plant’s four boilers already have been outfitted with the pollution control systems and work continues on the others.
