Turow CFB Modernization Gained Lower Emissions, Increased Capacity
The last unit of the Turow CFB rehabilitation project in Poland was handed over to Elektrownia Turow in December 2004. Six pulverized coal (PC) boiler islands built in the 1950s and 1960s were replaced between 1994 and 2004. The new units had to be built in the same footprint of the old PC boilers; wide fuel flexibility was desired; emission limits of 371 mg/Nm3 for SO2, 347 mg/Nm3 for NOx and 50 mg/Nm3 for particulate were set; and increased generation capacity was desired.
Six CFB boilers with total capacity of 1491 MW were built in the same footprint as the six old PC boilers rated at 1200 MW. The new units offer a net efficiency of more than 37 percent (Units 1-3) and more than 39 percent (Units 4-6) compared to the 32 percent of the original design. Foster Wheeler introduced its Compact design for three of the CFB boilers (Units 4-6). Rafal Psik of Foster Wheeler Energia Polska and Janusz Jablonski and Jan Wyszynski of ElektrowniaTurow told Power-Gen Europe attendees that all parameters guaranteed in the contract, both performance- and environmental-related, have been met by a significant margin.
Even lower emissions to meet future EU requirements could be obtained with only minor adjustments. A NOx limit of 200 mg/Nm3 could be achieved by adding a simple system to spray an ammonia/water solution into the separators. Further reduction of SO2 could be achieved by increasing limestone injection into the furnace or by employing an ash activation solution.
