PSNH Concludes Carbon Injection Trial

Public Service Company of New Hampshire (PSNH) wrapped up a four-week trial of mercury reduction by carbon injection. PSNH officials will share test results with legislators, who are studying a bill, introduced last January, that proposes cutting mercury emissions at PSNH's Bow and Portsmouth plants by 80 percent by 2013. The plants now emit about 130 pounds of mercury annually.

Plant manager Harold Keyes told the Associated Press that the $500,000 carbon injection pilot project doesn't contradict the company's opposition to the bill. "PSNH is not fighting reducing mercury. PSNH and Merrimack station want to reduce mercury and want to reduce it locally - and want to reduce it as much as we can," Keyes told reporters during a power plant tour. "The concern is that we want to make sure that state legislation does not go too far too fast, that it doesn't create a regulation that technology will not allow us to meet."
