NRG Energy and AES to Cut NO_x and SO₂ in New York Plants

NRG Energy Inc. and AES Corp. have reached agreements with New York state authorities to cut emissions from six New York coal-burning power plants. Under the settlement, NRG will reduce SO₂ emissions by 87 percent and NO_x emissions by 81 percent at its two New York-based plants, Huntley and Dunkirk. NRG will do this by installing new pollution controls, switching to cleaner burning low-sulfur coal, and retiring the four oldest and most inefficient units of the Huntley plant  (Units 63-66).

The agreement with AES and the New York State Electric and Gas Corp. (NYSEG) involves cutting emissions at four former NYSEG coal-burning plants. AES will install technology at the Greenidge plant, and it will either shut down or install pollution controls at the Hickling, Westover, and Jennison plants. The Jennison and Hickling plants have been dormant for years, but would be able to reopen if they are able to comply with the standards set by the agreement. AES will reduce emissions of NO_x at these four plants by at least 70 percent and SO₂ by at least 90 percent and pay $1 million towards energy efficiency, renewable energy or clean air projects.
