Emerson SmartProcess Reduces NOx 25 Percent on Cyclone-fired CP Crane
Constellation Energy installed Emerson Process Management’s SmartProcess optimization software on its 200-MW cyclone-fired CP Crane 1 and 2. In the late 1990s, Constellation installed natural gas reburn/overfire air systems on both units, resulting in a 60-65 percent NOx reduction using the overfire air only. Because CP Crane units are load-following, Constellation needed an optimization product that could dynamically optimize the process during constantly changing demand.
Final commissioning of the SmartProcess modules was completed in late 2003. On load ranges between 110- and 200-MW, NOx reduction varied between 17 and 44 percent with greater reduction at lower loads. This was expected because lower loads normally offer more room to bias the parameters affecting NOx formation. The NOx optimization portion of the project has provided the utility with a 25 percent average reduction in NOx emissions with a relatively small capital investment that was recovered in the first five months of the project. The project’s second phase, which focused on unit performance improvement, also made the unit more competitive in the dispatching system.
