EERC is Testing Solucorp’s MBS as a Binder of Mercury in FGD Systems

Solucorp Industries patented Molecular Bonding System (MBS) has been proven to cost effectively and permanently immobilize mercury contamination by preventing the leaching of elemental mercury and mercuric compounds in waste. MBS is a project-specific blend of naturally occurring dry powders. EPA’s Multiple Extraction Procedure (MEP), a repetitive leaching test that mimics long-term acid rain degradation and measures the treated material’s resistance and stability, has proven that MBS treated material will remain stable for at least 1000 years.

MBS can be added to a scrubber to bind both elemental and ionic forms of mercury. The resulting compound is insoluble. For coal units that already have scrubbers, the initial cost outlay for a MBS System would be fairly low and operating costs would also be competitive.
