High Temperature Catalyst for Simple Cycle Units
Howard Franklin of Hitachi America, Ltd. discussed Babcock Hitachi’s high temperature catalyst for SCR in simple cycle gas turbine plants at Power-Gen 2002. This catalyst has sufficient activity packed into a relatively small volume allowing for compact, low pressure drop designs. It has considerable experience with proven durability at high temperatures, to 1100° F and is only temperature limited by the increase in ammonia oxidation rates with increasing operating temperature.
The catalyst has a corrugated shape that packs a large surface into a relatively small volume and minimizes the catalyst’s thermal sensitivity and thermal expansion. A ceramic substrate is used for the base with a mixture of titanium oxide, tungsten oxide and secondary additive as the active catalyst. Performance was satisfactory for over 20,000 operating hours.
