PRB Coal Production Increased 30 Million Tons

Hill & Associates said in its assessment of the coal market that the Powder River Basin (PRB), the nation's leading source of low-sulfur coal, saw a 30-million ton increase in production last year to nearly 394 million tons. "Year 2002 will also be a banner capacity expansion year in the PRB," the report said. "Production capacity will increase to 428 million tons in 2002 — a 35 million ton increase over 2001. Whether or not actual coal production expands to meet the full new capacity depends upon the market." Coal prices in the PRB, which is centered in Wyoming and Montana, surged early last year from an average of $5 per ton to more than $14 per ton, however the price had fallen back to $6.60 by December 2001.
