International Institute of Nano and Molecular Medicine (I²NM²) at the University of Missouri-Columbia Opens 30,000 sq. ft. Lab

I²NM² is a new campus wide research center dedicated to the discovery and application of fundamental and translational medical science based upon previously unexplored chemistry combined with nanotechnology and the biosciences. I²NM² will shortly become the international leader in the reinvigorated field of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), a cell-selective binary radiation method for cancer, arthritis and evolving non-invasive surgical protocols. The BNCT program will be conducted with the dedicated neutron source now under construction at the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR; the most powerful university-based research reactor in the world) and the use of the life sciences laboratory of the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center, including small animal facilities. I²NM² will be housed in its own 30,000 ft² laboratory building now nearing completion in Reactor Park adjacent to the MURR and the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center.

I²NM² is engaged in multifaceted research projects involving the creation of novel materials, devices and agents enhanced by nanotechnology with applications in medicine, related materials science and beyond. Current research is focused in six general areas: a) discrete target-specific molecular (monodisperse) nanoparticles which carry multiple copies of, or a combination of, diagnostic and therapeutic agents, b) first demonstration of the proof-of-principle for boron neutron capture therapy of cancer, arthritis and radiation mediated surgery (BNCT), c) development of nano-sized molecular motors with biomedical applications, d) the development of catabolism-resistant pharmaceuticals based on carborane surrogate chemistry, e) the design, synthesis and characterization of new, high-energy materials for energy storage in units ranging from nano dimensional to macroscale, f) the development of advanced hydrogen storage systems based upon nanotechnology and hydride chemistry.

I²NM² is currently staffed by four faculty in chemistry and radiation biology and positions for additional academics in several fields exist at all levels. A research team of approximately twenty researchers is currently employed. The Institute is funded by the NIH, DOE, NSF, Honeywell and the Washington Savannah River Company.

The new 30,000 square foot laboratory building housing the International Institute of Nano and Molecular Medicine (I²NM²) at the University of Missouri-Columbia houses several large synthetic and analytical chemistry laboratories, which include 24 chemical fume hoods, an isolated high-pressure chemical autoclave reaction laboratory, and a laboratory equipped with explosion proof fixtures. The Institute also houses a new Mass Spectrometry facility for Synthetic Chemistry Laboratory (MSSCL) and a nuclear magnetic resonance laboratory (NMR). Future expansion within the building will provide additional synthetic and biochemical laboratory space.

Juki Europe Moves to Nuernberg

After the extraordinary year of 2007, Juki Automation Systems Europe was able to manifest that result in 2008. Even though Juki had to face sinking sales figures in the last quarter of 2008, a solid gain was achieved over the whole year. The before-tax turnover to gain ratio lies at 9.93%. Juki is especially proud of the fact that again more than 40% of the turnover was generated with new customers. So Juki can still deservedly state that they are amongst the winners of the actually highly strained capital equipment industry.

To cope with the immense growth since 2003, in August 2008 Juki Germany finally moved into new premises in Nuernberg. The most important advantage is the extension of the training and technology center which helps to satisfy the continually growing customer demands. After the reconstruction phase, the Juki Germany headquarters now offer a space of more than 3.500 sqm. (37,660 sq. ft.)

Increasing sales figures and the stable growth over the past years also required a step-up of the service and sales structure so that Juki hired additional people by the end of 2008. Juki is thus successfully swimming against the general current of economy.

Juki Japan is also fighting under high pressure to meet all actual product requirements. Thus the current product portfolio with the High-Speed Series FX-1R / FX-3 and the FlexLine Series KE2070 / KE2080 was completed for 2009 by an Entry-Level Series of machines. The new KE2050Light and KE2060Light modules are available at a base price of only € 58.000,-.

This enables Juki to offer the right machines for any requirements and for all customer segments. A major advantage is that all Juki assemblers are fully compatible with each other. Every single unit convinces with its high reliability, flexibility and of course with the well-known concept of "Lowest Cost of Ownership".
