Coronavirus Mask Reuse Webinar April 2 YouTube

Cleanroom, biotechnology, filtration, and decontamination experts discussed ways to design reusable masks and then clean them. Panelists included Wallace Leung of Polytechnic University Hongkong who described the work he has been doing on nanofibers for face masks. Reusable masks using nanofibers have high efficiency and can be manufactured at relatively low cost;

Christine Sun, Waterloo Filtration Institute compared medical and N95 filters with and without electrostatic charges. The charging greatly increases efficiency. Decontamination in an oven only reduces efficiency slightly.

David Shelep, Paramount Sciences compared decontamination technologies and concluded that H2O2 and several other options can be immediately employed.

Jim Agalloco, Agalloco Associates covered use of UV and CLO2.  Nebraska is using a UV torch to successfully decontaminate masks.

Barry Garfinkle, Barry Garfinkle Associates, had a number of insightful comments relative to the degree of destruction needed.  There are no absolutes.  A technology may be less efficient but if the mask is only slightly contaminated this may be sufficient.

Jeff Mathers, Purafil was to give a presentation on media which kills viruses. There was an overbooking situation and some registrants were not able to participate. So Jeff will present in a subsequent webinar. There were five presentations in the 2 hour session.

Christine Sun of Waterloo Filtration Institute provided guidance on face mask performance.  When meltblowns are charged the efficiency is much higher than when uncharged. She pointed out that there was only a slight decrease in efficiency when used masks were decontaminated in an oven.  Medical and N95 masks were compared. She emphasized the importance of the mask fit. The YouTube with her recoded presentation is also available
