ZoloBOSS Combines with CombustionOpt to further Reduce NOx at JT Deely

CPS Energy 2 x 446 MW J.T. Deely power plant has a history of NOx reduction. Mario Sanjuan of CPS Energy, Ron Zimmerman of Zolo Technologies, and Peter Spinney and Vilas Malik of NeuCo reported at Coal-Gen 2009 that in 1998 CPS Energy committed to voluntarily reduce NOx by 15 to 20 percent. This was achieved by combustion control tuning, staging, and installation of low NOx nozzle tips. In 2004 CombustionOpt was installed, separated overfire air was added in 2005, and Model Predictive Control was added in 2007. Deely 1 and 2 were achieving 0.12 and 0.13 lb/MMBtu NOx versus the goal of 0.08 lb/MMBtu.

In 2009 Deely added ZoloBOSSTM in-furnace sensors. Motivations for adding ZoloBOSS included the new Spruce unit, increased coal costs, recognition that in-furnace combustion data would provide additional performance gains, and providing justification for installing individual fuel air damper controls. The ZoloBOSS makes use of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy measurements, laser multiplexing capabilities, and tomographic algorithms to generate two-dimensional maps of boiler conditions including temperature, oxygen, CO, CO2 and water vapor in real time anywhere in the combustion region or in the back-pass of the boiler. Measurements can be made at multiple locations at once. Installation is simple and requires only a 2 ½-inch access port for each pair of measurement heads. Measurement is possible with only a beam of light; the system does not need calibration and does not drift. ZoloBOSS together with CombustionOpt was able to minimize CO and O2 deviations within the furnace and use spatial resolution to better control NOx.

Initial results showed NOx reduction from 0.138  lb/MMBtu to 0.112 lb/MMBtu (19 percent), CO change from 8 ppm to 52 ppm (still within limit), and Perflndex (fuel efficiency index) change from 776 to 772 (0.6 percent). JT Deely 1 is continuing to improve ZoloBOSS-based combustion models and optimize NOx and heat rate. ZoloBOSS was installed at JT Deely 2 during the summer of 2009.
