EPA May Change Cleanup Plan for Chemplex Site in Iowa
The Chemplex Superfund site in Camanche, Iowa was placed on the Superfund list in 1984. Contaminated soil and waste at the site have already been cleaned up. The mandatory Five Year Review in 2004 found the current pump and treat system addressing groundwater contamination to be protective of human health and the environment. However, experts reported that the pump and treat system was not able to contain contaminated groundwater in the designated area, and a new plan was needed to address the problem. EPA then requested that the responsible parties, Citigroup and Chevron Texaco, prepare a focused feasibility study to evaluate potential alternatives to the existing pump and treat system. Contaminants of concern are DNAPLs that have settled in fractures in the bedrock. The draft feasibility study contains three options: taking no action, continuing the current pump and treat system, or performing exposure control by treating hot spots and extending the municipal water supply. EPA will decide if there is a preferred alternative, once the final feasibility study is complete.
