The city of Canton, IL and International Truck and Engine Corp. of Warrenville have reached an agreement on cleaning up the old International Harvester site in Canton. (International Truck and Engine is the successor of International Harvester.) The 33-acre site is adjacent to the city center. According to the agreement, International will pay for the cleanup of all below-ground contamination and provide engineered barriers that meet EPA standards. It will also provide an environmental insurance policy for the site. The city will be responsible for any above-ground cleanup. Remediation during the first phase of work is expected to begin next year.
