Water Treatment Chemical Selection and Use Critical to Power Plant Operation

The range of water treatment chemicals and applications in the power industry were reviewed in the webinar.  The new ELGs will require additional chemicals. Options were discussed along with chemicals for boiler feedwater, steam, cooling and wastewater. The concern about bromine and mitigation methods was reviewed. The use of lime and creation of calcium sulfite sludge which could be chemically fixed with additional lime was proposed as a way to deal with the effluent guidelines. This is an option where sulfur levels are medium or lower and where the market for gypsum is not robust. Many of the new power plants in Asia are using ultra- supercritical technology and need the highest quality treatment chemicals. Some information on Asian suppliers was provided.
