Coal-fired Boiler Optimization” Hot Topic on October 11, 2012

The second of a two-part Hot Topic Webinar on coal-fired boiler optimization was this week.  As was the case two weeks ago for part one (on September 27), we heard from several experts about optimizing the heat rate and efficiency of a coal fired boiler. The presenters this week were:

Ati Manay, PMP, P.E., Product Manager of “SMART Clean” at Clyde Bergemann Power Group Americas discussed “On Load Boiler Cleaning Optimization Technologies and its Integration into Boiler Back End Equipment Temperature Control.” Ati discussed the use of sensors in the convection and furnace zones of a boiler, along with SMART feedback devices, to reduce clinker formation and heat transfer loss. The SMART system also contains a learning algorithm which learns, for example, which sootblowers to activate and in what order to provide optimum cleaning. Ati also briefly presented an example of the use of the SMART technology in a PRB conversion case.

Stephen Storm, Principal and Owner of both Stephen Storm, Inc. and SX Powertech, LLC, discussed the Inter-relationships of Combustion, Efficiency, Reliability & Air Pollution Control.”  Stephen discussed how factors such as the advanced age of a unit and in-air leakage can have an impact on combustion; optimizing the air/fuel ratio at the burner may not be enough.  He also discussed how various factors can have an impact on NOx and SO2 emissions and on the operation of downstream air pollution control devices.  He advocates a comprehensive and “holistic” approach to boiler optimization, which acknowledges the interrelationship between many co-existing factors.
