China FGD/SCR was Hot Topic this Week prior to Beijing Conference Next Week

A global group of participants discussed the Chinese air pollution control market yesterday in the McIlvaine Hot Topic Hour. The Chinese market is now the biggest for FGD and rapidly becoming the largest for SCR. The nuclear disaster in Japan and the revelations about methane releases from shale and conventional gas are going to steer China toward even more coal in the future.  The most efficient and environmentally benign use of coal is with energy and chemical complexes.

Yu.Y. Liu of Shell Global Cansolv cited initiatives in China to supply FGD systems to make sulfuric acid followed by enhanced oil recovery using recovered CO2. Amine scrubbing first removes the SO2. A second amine scrubber separates the CO2. Cansolv is already supplying such a system to Saskpower in Canada.

There was a review of SCR activities. Fuel Tech has been active in selling SCR systems in China for gas turbines and waste incinerators. Cormetech, Ceram, Haldor Topsoe, and others are major catalyst suppliers. Chris Ferguson of Honeywell cited their use of manufacturing and other facilities in China to promote their SCR systems.

Bill Hankins of Wahlco cited the many benefits of using urea to ammonia systems as opposed to anhydrous or aqueous ammonia. Safety concerns are just as important to Chinese purchasers as those in Europe and the U.S. You can view Bill’s power points on the McIlvaine Global Orchard Free site as well as in the protected tracking site.

One of the best routes to bridging the knowledge chasm is the InterWEBview™ in each of the important languages. During the next few days McIlvaine will be conducting InterWEBviews™ in Chinese with Wahlco and W. L. Gore. These will be posted on the McIlvaine site as well as on the suppliers’ sites. They will also be linked to the electronic presentation accompanying a speech to be given by McIlvaine personnel in Beijing next week.

Information about the program and the draft of the McIlvaine speech are found on the free site under “Calendar of Events.”
