Dampers and Expansion Joints was the Hot Topic Yesterday

More than 100 years of damper and expansion joint experience has been logged by the speakers in the Hot Topic Hour yesterday. They were

Michael Green, General Manager, KE-Burgmann USA

One application for expansion joints that has caused some challenges is the post SCR joint. This area is subject to ammonia contamination due to ammonia slip through the catalyst. Several speakers addressed the material selection for this application to maximize joint life. A new product, Flualine, is not only better for this service but also is less expensive than conventional Fluorelastomer.

Ron Maxwell, Manager Damper Business Unit, Senior Flexonics Pathway

Both metallic and fabric expansion joints are furnished by this division of Senior PLC. The parent company has manufacturing facilities in 14 countries.

George Papailias, Marketing Manager PAPCO Industries, Inc. cited the advantages of fabric expansion joints over metallic. They include cost and allowance for duct misalignment, among others. Baffles and a number of combinations of composites are among the options for increasing the fabric life of an expansion joint.

Chris Dyjak and Jeffrey C. Korth, Vice-President Sales Effox-Flextor, Inc. covered the Effox/Flextor merger. This merger provides European fabrication strength. With a fabrication shop in Shanghai there is now good coverage for a damper business that exceeds $50 million/yr.

John A. Powell, Director Isolation Products Wahlco Metroflex, provided details on dampers and expansion joints for FGD, SCR and gas turbines. This company has long and extensive experience with gas turbine applications.
