Holistic approach to NOx saves Money and decreases Emissions - Hot Topic Hour July 24, 2008

Smart software and improved burners can reduce heat rate and emissions. This was the conclusion of six very experienced speakers at the Holistic NOx Hot Topic Hour yesterday. The speakers were

Ray Johnson shows that if you combine two optimization packages, one for soot blowers and one for combustion optimization, you have better results than just with combustion optimization.

Jeff Williams addressed a broad range of optimization opportunities starting with the entire boiler fleet and then working downward through combustion and SCR optimization to the loop Metrics.

Carlos Moreno listed a number of boilers using the Ultramax optimization system. NOx reduction ranges as high as 30 percent. Both Ultramax and Siemens have installations in China. This shows the growing emphasis on NOx reduction in China.

Bill Poe covered optimization from coal/fuel blending to combustion to SCR for NOx reductions totaling up to 35 percent. Other benefits include improved catalyst life and reduced flyash contamination. Optimization systems need to take into account the range of pollutants but also all the performance and economic impacts.

Joel Vatsky and Tom Schults explained the advantages of advanced burners for controlling, NOx, slagging and unburned carbon. Fuel balancing equipment is critical. Over 16,000 MW have been converted to the Siemens design.
