“Instrumentation for Process Control” was the Hot Topic for November 13, 2008

The presenters were as follows:

v  Randy Smith of FERCo with Richard Thompson as a backup.

v  Ben Breen of Breen Energy Services

v  Peter DeBarber of Horiba

v  Phil Zyskowski of Sick Maihak

v  Ronald Zimmerman of Zolo Technologies

Randy cited the advantages of the In Situ KnoxCheck. This is a system which monitors catalyst performance. It has advantages over laboratory reactivity tests in that it can be done continually and it takes into account the impact of plugging. With SCR systems slated to operate year round in 2010 (under CAIR), it will be critical to monitor catalyst performance during operation. Systems can be permanently installed or can be mobile to move from one unit to another.

Ben addressed both combustion and post combustion instrumentation systems. Real time adjustment of over-fire air can be made based on monitoring CO, O2 & NO. Improvements in spatial CO and O2 monitoring have been made with a new zirconium oxide instrument from ABB. Back-end corrosion and fouling problems can be reduced with monitoring of ammonium bisulfate, SO3, and sodium bisulfate.

Peter extolled the advantages of the use of NOx analyzers to control the ammonia injection for the purposes of balancing efficiency needs, ammonia consumption, and ammonia slip.

Phil explained how an in situ analyzer can be used for SO2, NOx, NH3, and NO2 measurement.

Ron discussed the laser-based sensors which provide real-time combustion optimization. The system can be used for manual diagnostic tuning, for parametric testing and optimization and most importantly for continual automated combustion optimization. Case histories showing opacity and NOx reduction were provided.
