Power-Gen Audio Interviews/Pictures are Posted on the Hot Topic Site

Here is the link to the site with the pictures of the interviewees and their audio interviews at Power-Gen in New Orleans.

You can click on any company to see a miniature picture and a link to an audio interview. If you click on the picture it expands to full screen. We reported on some of these interviews several weeks ago. Not too many people had the luxury of spending three days going from stand to stand, so this is a quick way to hear the latest from any of the 28 interviewees.

We now have completed the cycle with the first audio interviews at EUEC, then Electric Power, Power-Gen Europe, Coal-Gen and now Power-Gen. We will be at EUEC again at the end of the month and will start the cycle again.

The more than 300 audio interviews and the webinar presentations have been posted to the Decision Trees and are also accessible by person name and by company.

We do think it is important to connect faces with names. That is why we are making sure to obtain people pictures. A number of ICAC division meeting people also appear on the Power-Gen website along with a presenter at the Siemens stand and presenters at the Clyde Bergemann webinar.

NOx Reagents are Rising in Price and Reliability say Hot Topic Hour Presenters

Lots of experience is being gained in reducing NOx from power plant stacks. In the Hot Topic Hour on January 17 there were good discussions building on the March 2007 webinar on the same subject. The presenters yesterday were new with the exception of Ben Breen, Breen Energy Solutions.

Jodi Crawford of Airgas presented some of the advantages of aqueous ammonia. She pointed out that quality is a function of the DI water which is used. She stated the need for specifications which will ensure purchasers that phosphorous and other contaminants are below harmful levels. Jodi cited upcoming specifications from ICAC. McIlvaine volunteered to contact ICAC on this matter. Maybe a special webinar just on specifications would be warranted.

Bill Hankins and Barry Southam of Wahlco presented a very impressive list of urea to ammonia installations. There is even one in Korea and several in Italy. Barry indicated that Southern Europe had safety concerns and was a good market. Chinese utilities are selecting anhydrous ammonia.

Bill Ellison of Ellison Consultants provided details on a 25 MW Lextran multi-pollutant control system which is operating in Romania. It is achieving very high SO2 and mercury removal and is also reducing NOx by 68 percent. Funding is coming from Israel and the Netherlands. URS has been doing some of the testing. The heart of the system is an emulsion with the proprietary catalyst to ensure the pollutant capture. Bill said capital and operating costs are favorable. The next step will be the license of the process.

Ben Breen of Breen Energy Solutions talked mostly about the probe system which provides measurement of SO3 and ABS. This can be used to control ammonia additions but also the additives to neutralize the SO3. A number of systems are now in use. Breen also addressed the lean fuel reburn technology which uses coal-water slurries. NOx reduction and mercury capture are improved with this technology.

Valves for Power Plant Air and Water Systems is the “Hot Topic” for January 24

 at 9:00 a.m. CST

It has been nearly a year since we had our “Hot Topic” discussion on valves. The interest was high enough and the questions challenging enough that the session lasted over two hours.
