Briefs:

WEFTEC: Over 30,000 people viewed 1000 exhibition stands at McCormick Place in Chicago the first week in October. Most of the exhibits involved combust, flow and or treat. The following analysis of the market was provided to the exhibitors.
Flow and Treat Purchases by U.S. Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators will exceed $13 billion this Year
November 8 Webinar: Combustion Flue Gas Treatment. This webinar on November 8 will cover the markets and activities of individual purchasers. Sixteen power companies will buy 55 percent of the flue gas treatment systems next year. The top Waste to Energy system suppliers are building and operating multiple plants. The individual owner purchases of wet systems with lots of pumps and valves and dry systems with pneumatic conveyors and dry solids flow control will be assessed. The role of catalyst, lime and ammonia suppliers will be covered.
The purchases of instrumentation and reagents will be changed by the trend toward remote O&M. Also, the role of user groups and McIlvaine services in creating clear total cost of ownership analyses will be probed. The recent DSUA user meeting where the benefits of IIoT and Remote O&M were demonstrated will be used as an example. Filtration and WEFTEC Conferences in September both Heralded IIoT
Herve BUISSON, VP Process Engineering Americas of Veolia was a keynote speaker at Filtration 2017 organized by INDA. His talk was The Water Industry Adoption of IIoT. The previous week his firm was one of the larger of the 1000 exhibitors at WEFTEC.
Herve provided details on Aquavista, Veolia's digital tool which provides
- Improved asset performance, higher plant efficiency
- Lower operational and capital costs, reduced maintenance, chemical use and energy consumption
- Full overview of equipment or plant from a remote location and online access to documentation
- Increased safety by leveraging predictive analytics to mitigate critical points
- Convenience of monitoring multiple sites anywhere, anytime, at any device through a secure cloud-based system and a single & intuitive portal
- Flexibility through an agnostic connection/communication system adapted to customers specifications, needs and existing installations
- Proven results at hundreds of municipal and industrial plants connected to Aquavista today
Relative to the use of movement up the chain from data to wisdom, Herve cited Veolia activities to determine
• Key Technical Performance Indicators (KTPI) on filters to transform data into information
• Key cost benefit indicators to transform information into value for our customers (McIlvaine comment would be that this will provide total cost of ownership (TCO))

Concerns continue to be around real-time water information (vs. sampling and lab analysis) to prevent pollution and toxic conditions from arising from aging infrastructure, climate change and human/industry underutilized waste products. Anuarco segmented the following five areas for innovation: sensors, connection tools, software, insight, and action
Six key features of innovative IoT devices and systems for water quality are:
1. Accurate, durable and intelligent devices/sensors with long deployment lifespans
2. Low-energy, low-power devices across secured networks
3. Common standard interface protocols: RS485/232, MODBUS, WIFI, Radio (Bluetooth/LoRa/SIGFOX), Cellular
4. RTC (real time control) optional and RTA (real time access)
5. Equipment agnostic platforms
6. Intuitive, field readable and open source API driven data
The McIlvaine thesis is that the Industrial Internet of Wisdom (IIoW) needs to empower IIoT. This is explained at Navigating the New Market Route for High Performance Products and Services. Veolia cites the KTPI and TCO information. Anurac cites field readable data. Both impact IIoW. McIlvaine believes that there will be a contribution from high level subject matter experts (Subject Matter Ultra Experts) who will need to evaluate the prolific data from process management systems such as Aquavista. These SMUEs will often be utilized for brief periods of advice. Therefore, the availability of data on phones or iPad will be very advantageous.
