The market for CEMs has been more volatile than the market for stack testing. Although even stack testing could get a big boost as power plants and equipment suppliers find out that their new permits will require condensibles measurement. At the Mega symposium there were all sorts of needs demonstrated. Continuous measurement of SO3 could be critical. A better way to measure condensibles, such as the dilution sampler, may be in order. Mercury raises all sorts of questions for both intermittent and continuous measurement.

The gas turbine market in the U.S. was a big source of monitoring and sampling business. But now this segment is way down and not bouncing back soon. On the other hand, there are all sorts of opportunities. The U.S. coal retrofit projects of SCR and now FGD are creating a big monitoring market. Around the world there continue to be new steel mills, chemical plants, pulp mills, and refineries. Furthermore, refineries in the U.S. are good prospects because of the consent decrees which require them to install CEMs and equipment.

You can now track all the new steel mills, incinerators, cement plants, and other projects around the world in Air Pollution Monitoring and Sampling World Market Updates.

$5-Billion Steel Plant Slated for China

The Formosa Group has confirmed that it is planning to develop a giant steel plant in Qingdao, northern China. The plant, estimated to cost Formosa U.S.$5 billion, is intended mainly to supply steel to Formosa Motor, a spin-off of the Formosa conglomerate, which plans to relocate part of its manufacturing operations from Taiwan to mainland China, a corporate source said. The Qingdao plant is projected to have an annual capacity of 10 million metric tons of various steel products, with after-tax profits amounting to U.S. $1.1 billion a year.

Jamaican Alumina Plant Slated for $115-Million Expansion

The Government was optimistic recently that there would be no labor disruption on the U.S.$115-million expansion at the Jamalco alumina refinery in Clarendon. The Government supports this expansion which would increase the plant's output by up to 200,000 tonnes a year go through as it would serve as an example to other operators to follow suit in expanding and modernizing facilities so as to help improve Jamaica's competitive position in the world alumina industry.

The one-million tonne Jamalco refinery is owned 50:50 by the Government and Alcoa, with Alcoa being the managing partner.

China Financing Pakistan Steel Project

China would give $2.4 billion financial assistance to help undertake three mega development projects that includes $700 million for the expansion of the Pakistan steel mills.

“This new huge financial assistance by China is very important for Pakistan as it will further cement trade and economic relations between the two countries," said Pakistan Prime Minister's Advisor on Finance, Shaukat Aziz.

"For the expansion of the Pakistan steel mills China would extend roughly $700 million. Earlier Pakistan had signed an agreement with Russia for increasing the annual production of the steel mills from 1.1 million tons to 1.5 million tons. "And now we have discussed with Chinese authorities to further increase the production from 1.5 million tons to three million tons annually," the minister for industries and production said.

"China was considering relocating one of the steel mills from Beijing to some other part of the country. We are looking into the possibility of buying the main machinery of that mill for our Karachi Steel Mills."

CSN Planning Steel Mill in Brazil

CSN, one of Latin America's largest steelmakers, is reviving plans to increase its capacity by two-thirds by building a plant in Brazil and possibly buying assets abroad, its president said.

"We think acquisitions abroad that would add value to our Brazilian plants would be interesting," said Benjamin Steinbruch. He made clear a plant in the United States, where Cia Siderurgica Nacional already has a steel mill, would be the preferred option. He said that before May, he would present to the administrative council a project to raise CSN's capacity to 10 million tonnes of raw steel from the current 6 million tonnes. Steinbruch heads the council.

By providing information on most of the bigger projects involving monitoring, you can check the activity level of your licensees and have a better feel for your market share in each country.

Why do we integrate these project reports with the world market report? The reason is our belief that you need an integrated approach to sales and marketing. The global forecasts by the corporation should be consistent with quotas for the individual territories. These quotas in turn must be set by the specific opportunities that are available. The advantages to this approach are described in Integrated Approach to Sales and Marketing
