$56 Billion Expenditure for Power Plant SCR in Next 15 Years

 

Recent developments in the world energy outlook and environmental consequences have greatly increased the market for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems.  $56 billion will be invested in SCR systems for coal-fired boilers worldwide between 2005 and 2020 according to the latest forecast of the online report, NOx Control World Markets, published by the McIlvaine Company (www.mcilvainecompany.com).

 

The new McIlvaine forecast predicts that by 2020 there will be SCR systems installed on over one million megawatts of coal-fired capacity up from 250,000 MW today.  The total investment will be $56 billion or $3.75 billion per year over the 15 year period.

 

The U.S. will be the leader with 360,000 MW.  Surprisingly, in second place will be China with 150,000 MW.  Germany will account for 80,000 MW while Japan will occupy fourth place with 60,000 MW.

 

This huge market has not been previously predicted.  However a number of recent developments substantiate the forecast:

 

(1)   New coal plants are being sited at accelerated rates.  In the U.S., China, India and many other countries there has been a sudden surge of activity in coal-fired generators.  Hundreds of plants are in planning or under construction.  Texas Utilities just announced a plan to install 11 new coal-fired boilers, all with SCR, on an accelerated schedule.

 

(2)   Energy security is taking precedence over global warming.

 

(3)   Environmental concerns and economic damage due to ozone are insuring the requirements for highly efficient NOx control.  China is presently installing 2000 MW of SCR systems and has another 50,000 MW under active consideration.  The main driver is the concern about local air quality and the refusal of provincial governments to permit plant construction until the operator agrees to install efficient control equipment.

 

Hong Kong is no longer a top ranked place to live for foreign businessmen.  The heavy pollution blown in from neighboring Shenzhen is the main reason for the decline.  In some areas of China, crop growth is negatively impacted by the failure of sunlight to penetrate the smog.

 

Beneficiaries of this accelerating market will be catalyst manufacturers, system suppliers, consulting engineers, ammonia producers, pump and valve companies.
