SEDIMENTATION/CENTRIFUGATION

UPDATE

August 2005

WATER & WASTEWATER

…..Black & Veatch announced recently that it has started to provide consulting services for construction management and supervision for two, 200,000 tons-per-day wastewater treatment plants and approximately 500 kilometers of trunk sewers and associated works. The projects will be built to serve Guangzhou City, located at the heart of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) and the capital of Guangdong Province which neighbors Hong Kong.

The PRD has seen rapid economic growth over the last two decades, which has come at a heavy environmental cost. Water quality in many stretches of the Pearl River is unsuitable for irrigation, aquaculture, and potential recreational uses, while also contributing to the serious pollution in the South China Sea.  Guangzhou City contributes about 25 percent of the total load of wastewater generation in the PRD,which in 2000 was estimated to be at 11.5 million m3/day.

…..Congressman Steny H. Hoyer announced that the House authorized the Army Corps to proceed on important waterway restoration projects in Southern Maryland.  The Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) authorizes the Army Corps of Engineers to undertake a total of nearly 700 projects and studies related to navigation, flood control or environmental protections. Approximately $10 billion in projects are included in the bill. The Senate must now pass its version of the legislation and then differences between the two bills must be worked out in a Conference Committee before the bill can become law.

…..Saudi Aramco said it is “allocating feedstock (for refining, power generation, and petrochemicals) to 24 expansion projects totaling $30 billion in investment” that are expected to come online during 2006-10. The oil industry provides 35% of the country’s nominal gross domestic product, 75% of government revenue, and 85% of export receipts.

Among oil and gas projects are five increases in crude oil production, a new natural gas liquids recovery plant and expansion of the master gas system, and expansion and upgrading of refining and distribution facilities.

Saudi Aramco said that the work will include the design and construction of more than 20 offshore platforms, gas and oil separation plants, and 2,300 km of flowlines and long-distance pipelines.

FOOD

…..Palm oil production has been growing significantly over the past two decades. Today, it represents 30 million tons out of the 100 million tons of total vegetable oil produced worldwide. Palm oils thus contribute to the economic developing countries and to the diets of millions of people around the world.
