Multibillion Dollar Projects Are Major Portion of the Site Remediation Market

Activity in the U.S. has peaked but remains at a high level. China and a number of other countries are accelerating their programs. In many countries, a big incentive is to reclaim land for purposes of new construction. Another major incentive is to make available more water for human use.
Some activities continue to generate remediation needs. Dredging of rivers and harbors to compensate for silt deposition, along with dredging for new harbors, results in sediment which is very often contaminated. This activity alone has created a billion dollar per year remediation market.
Accidents at nuclear power plants are creating both new and continuing markets. The expenditures at Fukishima continue at a high rate. It is expected that remediation will continue for decades.

Large companies such as Ecolab and Colfax have been expanding in the broader flow and treatment market. Xylem is in the market and has segmented their activities into treat, transport and test. McIlvaine has defined this market to include pumps, valves, compressors, liquid and air filtration equipment, biological treatment systems, treatment chemicals and all the related monitoring and control systems to move and purify fluids.
The growth in Asia this year is projected at 6 percent versus only 4 percent in Europe and 5.4 percent worldwide. This is in real dollars. Inflation is presently projected at 3.8 percent this year. The aggregate revenues of the companies participating in this market are anticipated to rise to $402 billion in 2015. Reported revenues are always in current dollars. So, one must take into account inflation to fairly compare the forecasts with the actual results.
In general, this market is growing at 1-2 percent faster than GDP. In part this is due to environmental regulations which add additional stimulus to the treat segment of the market. Another factor is the switch from conventional natural gas and oil to nonconventional recovery. The amount of treat, flow and test investment in a shale oil or shale gas extraction process is considerably greater than extraction from conventional sources.

The largest segment of the market involves reverse osmosis (RO). The less efficient ultrafiltration and microfiltration segments are smaller in the aggregate than the RO portion. Desalination is the largest single application for RO systems. Another large segment is residential. China with poor quality drinking water in many locations is a major purchaser of small under the sink RO systems.
One of the largest applications for both microfiltration and ultrafiltration is in municipal drinking water plants. These cross-flow systems compete with the traditional granular media filters. Ultrafiltration systems find use in food processing. A growing application is in membrane bioreactor systems. Waste is subjected to biological treatment. Membranes immersed in the treatment tank purify the treated water. By combining both biological treatment and filtration in one process, the cost and size of the process is reduced.
There is a multibillion dollar market for replacement modules. RO modules in desalination systems are replaced approximately every four years. The life varies from application to application.
