The pharmaceutical segment of the sedimentation/centrifugation market has been steadily increasing at a rate faster than the industry itself.  As biotechnology has moved from the pilot to production stage, the need for separation equipment has increased substantially. Disk centrifuges are the leading product with basket centrifuges close behind.  McIlvaine forecasts for world sales this year to the pharmaceutical industry (as they appear in Sedimentation/Centrifugation World Markets) are as follows:

WORLDWIDE INDUSTRY TOTALS

                                                Industry:  Pharmaceutical

                                                            ($ Millions)

                                    Subject                                    2004

                                    Clarifier                                    23.90

                                    DAF                                        16.12

                                    Decanter                                  35.83

                                    Disk                                         89.58

                                    Hydrocyclone                             3.58

                                    Other Centrifuges                     83.60

Some of the other hot areas for separation equipment are ethanol plants and FGD systems.  Many new ethanol plants are likely to be built if the Energy bill is passed by Congress.  A new EPA rule insures lots of scrubbers (FGD).  A power plant flue gas desulfurization system for a 1000 MW plant requires a thickener to take the bleed stream from a flow of 440,000 gpm.  More than 100 such systems will be needed.

The biggest market remains municipal wastewater treatment.  China has big programs for building wastewater treatment plants.  It is also going to purchase more FGD systems than any other country over the next 15 years.
