Water and Wastewater FGD Opportunities Shift toward East Asia

China is expanding its program to reduce SO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants at the same time the U.S. program is mired in battles over regulatory minutiae. The result is a slight increase in FGD revenues in 2013, but a reduced forecast for NAFTA.  This is the latest finding in FGD World Markets.

In the revised 2013 forecasts, the revenues will increase by $200 million to $7.8 billion. The NAFTA market is adjusted downward by $200 million while the East Asia market is adjusted upward by $400 million.

One of the contributors to the East Asia increase is the Chinese program to upgrade efficiency of existing scrubber systems. In the U.S., the negative effect is the delayed implementation of some of the dry FGD systems which will remove both SO2 and HCl.

Lime companies are gearing up for the increased lime demand in the U.S.  Graymont is moving ahead with plans to add a state-of-the-art, low-emissions third kiln to its mining and production complex in Pleasant Gap PA to meet growing lime product market demands in Pennsylvania and surrounding region.

Graymont has applied to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) for the requisite air quality permit and is proceeding with detailed engineering and design work for the new gas-fired kiln.  The new kiln will feature the most environmentally friendly technology anywhere in the lime industry.

The company anticipates PADEP’s decision on the air quality plan approval and other regulatory approvals before year-end.  If approved, construction will be initiated before the end of 2012.

The addition of this high-tech, low-emissions third kiln will increase production capacity by some 25 percent at Graymont’s Pleasant Gap plant, which already ranks as the most modern lime plant in the region. Top-quality jobs will be added to Graymont’s existing local work force and the project will generate additional direct and indirect economic benefits for the State College and Bellefonte area.

"This latest investment reflects our continued confidence in the economic future of Pennsylvania and neighboring states, and will further enhance our ability to support the success of lime customers in the region" said Graymont President and CEO Stéphane Godin.  "Our track record for unsurpassed supply reliability and going the extra mile to meet customers’ needs has made Graymont the partner of choice for any application that utilizes lime to create added value."

Most of the Asian power plants will incorporate limestone FGD systems. The investment in pumps, valves, piping, belt filters, cyclones and treatment chemicals will be very significant.  Consider that a 1000 MW power plant discharges 4 million cfm. The recycle limestone slurry rate is 100 gpm/1000 cfm, so the recycle requirement is 400,000 gpm. This is 570 mgd. So when China adds 50,000 MW of FGD in one year, they are adding 28,500 mgd of recycle pump capacity. This is close to the entire flow through secondary treatment plants in the U.S.

The pumps, valves, piping and couplings are used in the ball mill recycle system, the scrubber recycle system and in the FGD wastewater treatment. There have been recent innovations in some of these products. Victaulic, has introduced the Style 296A coupling for fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) pipe. The coupling offers much more efficient installation than the alternative methods of butt-and-wrap and adhesive bell-and-spigot pipe joints. In addition to the FGD recycle piping, it is ideal for industrial applications such as fly ash, slurry systems, cooling water, waste water, condensate, mild acids/chemicals, oil lines and drainage systems.

McIlvaine visited the Victaulic stand at the Mega symposium and took this picture of the new coupling:
