East Asia will account for 33 percent of the total market. NAFTA will be a distant second with sales of less than $13 billion. The rapidly growing market in Asia is shaped by a number of factors.

Investment in coal to liquids and coal to syngas projects: China is building both direct liquefaction and indirect liquefaction plants. End products are fuels and chemicals. Each plant has many valves to control water, products and treatment chemicals. Korea and Australia are also pursing these projects to convert coal to liquids and gases including LNG. Valve requirements are challenging due to the pressures and cryogenic temperatures.·
Coal-fired power plants: East Asia is moving forward with coal-fired power plants. China already consumes 3.3 billion tons of coal per year but is targeting 4.8 billion tons. Valves are used for intake water, cooling, boiler feedwater, flue gas desulfurization and wastewater treatment.·
Municipal drinking water and wastewater treatment. The migration of East Asians to cities and the infrastructure to meet their needs is ongoing.·
Continuing growth in production of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, foods, dairy products, and fish: China has the largest aquaculture industry in the world. In fact, fish production equals that of the ROW combined.·

The forecasts include reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration and microfiltration systems and replacement modules. Nanofiltration revenues are included in the ultrafiltration segment. Desalination is the largest single market. The Middle East has been the largest purchaser but other areas are finding that seawater is an important resource. Municipalities will be spending $2.6 billion for cross-flow membrane systems by 2019. Microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes remove more micro organisms than the traditional gravity filter. So for health reasons, cross-flow membranes are steadily gaining market share.
The power industry will be increasing its cross-flow membrane expenditures as it standardizes on zero liquid discharge systems. These systems eliminate any wastewater discharges. China is one of the country’s leading the way in this approach.
The pharmaceutical industry uses cross-flow membranes in processing. Solids are removed from broths and liquid products. Water for injection into humans is treated in reverse osmosis systems to assure purity.

The vessels used to support liquid filtration devices are constructed of stainless steel where there are hygienic or corrosion considerations. Centrifuge design includes the additional challenge of rotating parts. The scrolls and discs revolve at high speed. Stainless disc type centrifuges are used for wine, food, dairy and chemical applications. The scroll type centrifuges are used for sludge dewatering and for many chemical applications.
Reverse Osmosis housings are frequently constructed of stainless steel. Microfiltration and ultrafiltration housings used in desalination are also typically stainless steel.

In the last decade, cross-flow membranes have been an alternative selected by municipalities seeking protection against small microorganisms. Chemicals and ultraviolet disinfection are also widely used. The webinar on October 16 will explore each of these technologies and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
The devil is in the details. With gravity media filters is air scour, water backwash, or a combination the best way to keep the unit clean? What are the options regarding underdrains? How do systems utilizing an intermediate layer of gravel between the treatment media and the underdrains compare to those which retain the media directly? Should an online particle counter be used to monitor performance? If cross-flow membranes are used, should the medium be microfiltration or ultrafiltration? What about the tradeoffs between UV, onsite chemical generation and purchased chemicals? How do chemicals aid the filtration process?
