Ultrapure Water Market to Grow At An 8 Percent Rate Over Next Two Years
Over the next two years the market for ultrapure water systems and consumables
will grow by 5 percent per year measured in constant dollars and by 8 percent
per year measured in current dollars. Revenues will exceed $4.5 billion in 2014.
This is the conclusion reached in the latest forecasts appearing in Ultrapure
Water World Markets published by the McIlvaine Company.
Subject 2012 2013 2014
Annual UPW Revenue $ Millions 4,100 4,300 4,500
% Increase From Previous Year in 2010 $ 8 5 4.7
% Increase From Previous Year in Current $ 11 8 7.7
Ultrapure water is required by power plants, semiconductor manufacturers and
pharmaceutical companies. This high level of purity requires treatment equipment
which removes the smallest particles. It requires pumps, valves and piping which
will not provide any contamination. Sophisticated instrumentation which can
measure dissolved gases in ppb is also required.
The industry is served by hundreds of small as well as large companies. Many of
the large companies are anticipating growth which is higher than the predicted
industry average.

16,000 Municipal Wastewater Plants in U.S. Will Spend $5.5 Billion Next Year for
Flow Control and Treatment
This is the conclusion reached by the McIlvaine Company based on intelligence in
a number of the specific reports it publishes.
There are 16,000 municipal wastewater treatment plants in the U.S. of which
4,000 treat more than one million gallons per day. These plants are expanding to
meet a growing population and are renovating to meet new treatment regulations.
In 2013, these plants will purchase pumps, valves, instrumentation, chemicals
and treatment equipment with a total value of $5.5 billion.
U.S. Municipal Wastewater Plant Purchases in 2013
$ Millions
Pumps 1,900
Cartridges and Membranes 300
Valves 1,000
Liquid Filtration 200
Sedimentation and Centrifugation 400
Treatment Chemicals 1,300
Air and Water Monitoring and Instrumentation 400
Total 5,500
Most plants are buying chemicals on a yearly basis. Smaller plants are buying
all chemicals with one bid specification. Large plants are buying individual
chemicals in separate contracts. The average value per contract is $30,000.
Expansions and new plant construction involve much larger sums. Illinois plans
to invest over $1 billion in new projects with innovative financing which is now
being put into place. North Carolina announced that 32 projects would receive
$114 million through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund.
The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District has embarked on a $2 billion
facilities improvement project. The district's new permit from the state has
stricter standards for ammonia, nitrates and pathogens.
Fremont Ohio is moving forward with a $57 million wastewater treatment project.
Pierce County, Washington is embarking on a $350 million wastewater treatment
plant upgrade. Oak Harbor, Washington has just selected a site for a $97 million
treatment plant.
Detailed project information is published every two weeks in North America
